Hi everyone, I am a transfer student at UCB, econ intended, but planning to change into Applied Math with concentration in Econ.

This semester (fall 2012), I am taking:
Math 55
Poli 1
Econ 101B
Stat 20

For next semester would it be possible for me to take an upper division Math class? (I haven't taken Math 54 yet)

My planned Schedule for Spring 2013 is:
Econ 101A
Math 54
Stat 134
1 Upper Div Math Class (Preferably 104)

Is it going to be 'extremely hard' for me to succeed in my planned schedule? and what upper-div math class would be the best for me (since I haven't taken Math 54 yet).

They do say that 104 is one of the harder upper division math courses, and that something not quite as hard, like 110, should be one’s first upper division math course. However, 110 is linear algebra, and lists “54 or a course with equivalent linear algebra content” as a prerequisite.

the reason they say take 110 first is because the proofs are easy to go through. it gets progressively more complicated as you near the end of the course, but nothing fancy.

104 starts rigorous and only gets more so.

if you don’t know how to write a proof, just spare yourself the embarrassment and choose a different upper division like 128a (mostly computational)

I’m in the same boat as you. Well almost. I’m an econ major but I love math and part of me wants to switch to being a math major. I’m taking 54 this semester and will be taking 110 next semester. Since I only have 3 semesters left after this I don’t think I’ll have enough time to complete a math minor so I just decided I’m going to take one or two upper division math classes per semester for fun and not be confined to completeing major or minor requirements. I have read that the key to doing well in 104 is getting proficient at reading and writing proofs. If I were you I would take 54 next semester and wait until the following fall to jump into 104. Most upper division math classes list 54 as a pre requisite so your hands are going to be tied until you complete it… What is you ultimate goal? Do you plan on pursuing an econ PHD? That is what got me interested in math in the first place and it sounds like you have the same interests.

@ucbaalumnus & crowslayer: thanks a lot for your input guys. I really appreciate it. I think i’ll try to do some research about 128A. Thanks a lot once again guys.

@JavyUCB: thanks for the input man. And yes, I am trying to pursue a PhD in Econ, which requires me to do a lot of math haha. I actually wanted to major in econ while taking math 54 110 104 and 105, but I missed the deadline and so I’m trapped in applied math in econ lol.
