Hey everyone,
I’m going to be an accountancy major on the pre-law track at Miami U in Ohio this fall. I took my math placement test and landed myself in precalc, but I really want to take Calc I so i can be done with hard math forever. I do not have to take Calc II or beyond. I missed the cutoff for Calc by 1 question (I needed 16 right and I got 15). I’m not sure if I should fight into calc (it wouldn’t be extremely difficult) or if I should take precalc to get a better base. I have taken a precalc equivalent, but my math sequence in high school was kind of messed up. Here it is:
7th-Algebra I
8th-H. Geometry
9th-H. Algebra II
10th-Honors Algebra II and Trig (new school and I had to take this class)
11th-H. Geometry (they made me retake it)
12th-AP Stats
I know close to nothing about trig and I’m leaning towards taking precalc (4 credits) my first semester, along with my business core (8 credits) and my science elective (Physics in Music for non-majors, 3 credits)
My other option is Calc I (5 credits), Business Core (8 credits), and Opera Appreciation (3 credits, also satisfies my creative arts and humanities requirements), but I’m worried about not being prepared for Calc.
I’m meeting with my adviser for scheduling in a few weeks, but I know that I’ll have to take the business core, a math, and an elective that meets requirements. IOW, if i take precalc, I’ll take a harder required elective, if I take calc, I’ll take an easier elective. Rush is also second semester, if you think that will factor in.
Thanks for the advice!
