Just read about MATH206 on another post. My question is who should take this class?? My son is a freshman engineering EE major and his schedule so far looks like this:

It looks like it would be perfect for him to take MATH206 which is a 1 credit online course but does this make sense to take it at the same time as MATH241? He has no experience with Matlab although knowing about the class at this point he is going to look over the tutorial for MATH206 before even getting to UMD. Any advice would be welcome! We are actually a little disappointed that no one at UMD suggested taking this class.

I would imagine that anything that is taught in MATH206 could be self-taught, especially since all sections of MATH241 use it. If all else fails, the Professor/TA or classmates can help with picking it up. If he feels it would benefit him though, why not? I just figure there will be enough exposure in MATH241 and it shouldn’t be an issue. I’m personally looking to transfer next Fall and don’t intend on taking MATH206 as a Math/Physics major.

While he can self-study the material in math206, he may find it easier to follow a scheduled syllabus. Matlab will be used/useful to know for many other classes (math246, math240/461, enee205, etc). The matlab components introduced in the calc3/diffeq/linear algebra classes is more about seeing how software can crunch the problems they force you to solve on the tests by hand and to reinforce concepts (I.e. what happens when we change this? What’s going on here? etc.). I didn’t take math206 as a matlab course is built into the aerospace program, but I absolutley loved learning how to use matlab beyond the basic modules shown in the math courses.

Thanks da6onet- It sounds like he will be taught what he needs to use Matlab in his MATH241 class?? I was worried (he of course is not) that he would be missing important Matlab skills since he is skipping the earlier calculus classes with AP credit. Does anyone know how much work MATH206 is? The syllabus says 2-3 hours a day but that seems high.

No need to worry about skipping calc I & II as far as matlab, it is introduced with calc 3, diffeq, and linear algebra. There is tutoring available for the matlab in those classes as well as for 206. Looking at the schedule, the workload seems high because it is an accelerated class, September to October.
