Mathcamp or internship

I'm trying to decide between a prestigious mathcamp and a good internship. Can someone give me some guidance ? I'm good at math and science and love both. Hence I'm unable to decide. Which will be more appealing to admission officers of top universities ?

Thank you in advance for your response.

If it’s one of the top programs (i.e., Ross, PROMYS, HSMC, SUMAC, Canada/USA math camp), do the math camp.

I guess I don’t make it clear, but its a science research internship under a good professor. Does that make any difference ?

If you are choosing one over the other for its admissions benefit, then you are choosing for the wrong reasons.

Nope. cortona431. Since I like both, I don’t know which way to go.

Hmm. In terms of college admissions, the mathcamp would probably be better (it would also probably be more enjoyable).

However, the internship would help in other ways–when you’re applying for internships as a college freshman/sophomore, having some solid experience will get you more interviews.

Well the internship will get you letters of reference (and maybe publications), but mathcamp will probably be more fun…and you’ll have plenty of time to do research in college :p

It doesn’t have to be either or. Some of the math camps have a research component (promys, HSMC), where you are paired with a mentor who is a professor.

Note that you can still tell admissions that you were selected for the mathcamp or the internship, but was unable to attend either because of the scheduling conflict. Not attending the mathcamp for example doesn’t diminish the achievement in getting selected for it.
