Mathematics Major Course List Question

I want to major in math more than likely, i am only a freshman at a community college in my first semester. i have heard things about; if i take career related courses as electives I will get more opportunities for jobs after college. like econ, finance, business classes.

is this true? and if so please tell me if i should transfer to a Univ ASAP because community colleges offer nothing but the bare essentials

Assuming that you are in Texas, you can look up “transfer credit” at Texas universities to see which community college courses you need to prepare to transfer in your desired major.

For example, University of Texas, Austin, has the following:
[Transfer Resources | Be a Longhorn](http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/transfer/admission/factors/transfer-resources)

For the math major, you will want to take freshman calculus, multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations courses at your community college. Discrete math is occasionally available; take it as well if it is.

There may be other course requirements or recommendations. If you want to use a math major to get into finance or actuarial work, consider taking introductory economics, statistics, and finance/business courses.

So its not like set in stone or anything, If I just take some stat classes or econ then I could maybe work on those fields.

all i know is, that i love math, and i want to pursue it

One thing worth noting is that some universities require a proof-based linear algebra which requires an intro to proofs class as a prerequisite. If your community college doesn’t have such a class then their linear algebra course may not be considered transferable. That’s how it is at my university, and I know several people who had to retake linear algebra because the community college course wasn’t considered equivalent, as the community college didn’t offer any kind of intro to proofs class. I don’t know if that’s how it is anywhere else, just something worth watching out for.

Thanks for the tip chandi

Take as many as the bare essentials as you can at a reputable junior college. I did. I took Cal I-III and Linear Algebra.

Use this to make sure your courses will transfer.
