Matriculation Fee

Ok, I know I probably spelled it wrong but frankly it's late and I could not find the dictionary.

I have seen this mentioned before on some of the college web sites. Would someone please tell me exactly what it is. I realize it is some sort of deposit.
Is this seperate from the housing deposit? At what point do schools require this fee? If you child is depending on complete financial aide and can't afford to pay it early what happens? Is financial aid money available in time to pay this deposit? We plan to file for financial aide as soon as possible after January 1 of DS senior year. Approximately how much is this deposit? Does it vary by school or are they approximately the same everywhere?

It is a deposit that you pay when you accept your place in the class. It is counted as part of your tuition. I think the deposit varies by school, but is usually $200-300.

A related question: a friend of my D's was accepted at a flagship state school, which asked for a $500 (if my memory is correct) enrollment fee, a one-time fee that is not applied toward tuition. Is this common?

A matriculation fee is a registration fee and can also provides students with services like e-mail, computer hookups in halls, libraries, overall maintenance. Each college probably has it's own list of what it covers.
