What's the max number of classes that you can take at Penn? And will they charge more if you take more than a certain number of classes?

No, they don’t charge you more if you take more classes. As for course limits, they depend on the school. In CAS we are limited to 5.5 credits a semester, but that can be raised depending on the circumstance. In Wharton it is 5.5 and 6 I think if you have a certain GPA. For SEAS it is 6.5. A normal load in the College at least is 4 I think, but most of my friends and I take 5, and I went up to 5.5 last semester and will be going up to that again next semester. I think Penn is very manageable if you know how to use your time well and that also depends on what classes you take. I like to be challenged, so I take several challenging courses at the same time, but you don’t have to do that.

Lower Limit: 3
Upper Limit: I know people taking 7 classes (in M&T though). As long as you show you can handle it, you simply need to ask for permission from your advisor.

4 might be a bit on the lighter side (I took 4 a semester throughout freshman year). I think 5 is pretty standard.
