Thanks for clarification. I can see why Thumper was confused.

Key infoā€¦there are only 24 non-resident alien first year students. Soā€¦congratulations on your acceptance. You were part of the group that got some merit aid too. Great!

First, great job so far. Please keep us updated.
Second, if the target is <$30K then my guess is that you will have more success negotiating with private schools over financial aid than public schools.
Some publics provide a consolidated financial aid letter in March or so. That could include additional departmental awards. I recommend reaching out to your AO to see whatā€™s going on.

Thanks. Common data doesnā€™t report how many non resident aliens applied so performance against the peer group is unknown. However, looking at the average GPA and SAT range reported on the website it seems only fairly good international folks apply or get admitted.

Ok. Good to know. Would it make more sense negotiating when you have something else which compares bettee in hand?

Also even though my son got the highest range of presidential merit (16-20) he was not invited to join honors program. Not that we care about honors but that may indicate that his profile is not the top one amongst international accepted applicants.

Perhaps itā€™s still coming - they do say it comes at time of admission but then add this:

Early applicants who do not receive an invitation soon when first admitted to UVM may receive one as late as March.

I donā€™t think public schools negotiate but never hurts to try.

I read somewhere either on CC or reddit about someone receiving it in admission letter. Not sure if international. In any case considering requirement of 3.0 for continuation of merit and initial weeder classes it may be better to do first year normal and then if required and eligible transfer to honors in my view.

Iā€™m not sure Honors = worse grades. I only have one kid to speak of and itā€™s not the caseā€¦but different school.

Most say they go more in depth, etc. but Iā€™m not sure grades are lower. I could be wrong but I get the sense that the kids are more motivated and potentially do better overall - although I imagine thatā€™s a school by school thing.

Practically at this stage I am thinking even if they give, he may not choose that so why waste time. We have sent one email, may be we will follow up with another.

For others on the group. FAU honors is asking to verify the transcripts by third party before they accept them which costs 250$.

Yes one email has been done. Will follow up with another.

Today we got a reject from Hendrix College which was quite surprising! I believe all the credentials like GPA, SAT score, ECs etc. should be in top 25% of accepted students. Also the amount we indicated we can afford is above their average international EFC. Does anyone know any special considerations that Hendrix does for admitting students?

@Andygp , it could be as simple as there being a number of international students they want in their class. Your son may be a doppelganger for someone they already admitted. Maybe they have committed the FA for that pool, so while you need less, thereā€™s none to be had. (And remember that is they say they typically give 30% of tuition as aid, it could mean 3 full need students for every 7 FP, and they may already have those 3.) Maybe they have been inundated with students interested in what interests your son.

Iow, this is probably more about where they are in terms of their goals vs your son.

The maddening part of this process is that you never know why any decision is made. If I were guessing, Iā€™d say itā€™s having any FA need. But who knows?

Thanks much for the explanation. Yes something like that must have been the case.

Actually something weird happened with Hendrix. They didnā€™t receive transcripts even though all the other materials from common app they had received. No other school complained about such a weird situation. After about 15 days (year end holidays) we sent those separately through email and asked his highschool to email predicted grades.

As soon as they received materials within 2 days rejection letter arrives. May be all the admissions happened with early applications.

BTW the letter encourages the applicant to reapply after one year of education somewhere else

Only worth doing if they provide the maximum aid you needā€¦.

Good luck with other pending applications.
