May 2013 SAT II Chemistry

that’s the one they asked for, 8g gas sample and 3.2g of sulfur leaves 4.8g of Oxygen

3.2g S * (1mol S / 32g S) = 0.1 mols

4.8gO * (1mol O / 16g O) = 0.3 mols O

Formula was SO3

Hmm…so what did we decide on for KMT and the speed ones? Probably determines if I have -0 or not

About how many raw points do you think you can miss to still get an 800?

How many raw point for a 700 usually? I KNOW I’m not that close to 800, especially after reading through this thread lol.

@zwitterion -4/-5

It’s definitely more than 4 or 5 off raw score to geta 700. Even by a harsh curve it’d be in the teens.

I got a lot of TTCEs…

With at least -2, I got an 800.

What just happened? I only got a 750. Is it worth retaking?

What’s the curve usually like for this test? I generally do pretty well in chemistry but I only got a 780. If an 800 is really common then I’d definitely retake.

I’m sad. What’s usually my best subject was my lowest subject test score :(

http://media.collegeboard.com/digitalServices/pdf/research/SAT-Subject-Tests-Percentile-Ranks-2012.pdf</a>
Last year and 800 on Chemistry was in the 91st percentile. So it’s the third most generously curved non-language subject test out there (losing to Math II and Physics)
Pretty excited with my scores 800 on Bio M and 800 on Chem. Really stoked right now! Now I have to look forward to my SAT I in June. >_<

I got 750. I don’t think I’ll retake though

@huehuehue32 a 780 is not very different from an 800. College admission counselor would rather see you spend your time doing something more meaningful than working super hard to get maybe 2 to 4 more questions right on a test on which you have already demonstrated near mastery

And one has to realize that the percentiles for subject tests describe a much more gifted and determined pool of students. Most who take subject tests are aiming toward top 20 schools (because these schools require them). Therefore, a much larger percentage will receive higher scores. So, I better not see any whining about a 760+

@huehuehue32
I also generally do well in chemistry (in fact I recognize you from the Chemistry Olympiad Board), and I also did bad :(. While it was an extremely demoralizing experience, I’m sure the curve had been to been harsh enough for even to have USNCO semifinalists not make 800s.

For anyone who took the May SAT II for Chem and scored well, what preparation/tips do you recommend for the people taking the test in June?

Barron’s (along with my chem coursework) helped me score a 790. Also, I consistently scored 720s and 730s on the practice tests in there, which may lead one to conclude that the book provides more rigorous preparation. They give great content review. Practice tests are challenging and well-composed. And on Amazon, it’s a steal.

@Flying wombat. Yeah, it must have been pretty harsh. I probably missed more on this test than on the olympiad. Oh well.

Got an 800 did minimal studying other than learning those does this cause this questions and what order to answer the questions. I am in ap chem though

Brief tips for an 800: Take AP Chem. Try USNCO (I surprised myself by making semis). Get Barron’s and study through it. USNCO problems made the Subject Test look like cake.
