***May 2016 SAT (US Only) Thread***

I just got a 1460 and am going to retake in the fall but is my essay score (7/6/7) good enough for schools like Georgetown, BC, NYU Stern? I’m trying to decide whether I should retake with/without essay.

did anyone notice that they threw out one question? I didn’t take the test but wondered if anywhere it indicated to you that one question was not counted…

@1zogden1 I actually got the same score and am looking at the same schools haha. None of those schools require or recommend the new essay so the score doesn’t matter. What score are you aiming for if you don’t mind me asking?

@class0f2017 well I got a 790 on math so I think I’m set there but I only got a 670 on EBRW so I’m looking to raise that to a 730-740 which would put me to about a 1520/30 which is around Georgetown’s 75th percentile which is my #1 as of now. How about you?

@Currywiththeshot First of all, great job on achieving such a high score! The essay score will look great to any college.
Honestly, managing your time between ECs, essays, etc. and standardized tests is your decision. Objectively, Yale’s average score for admissions is 1540- so you should try and push maybe 20-40 points higher. However, admissions to top colleges isn’t just about the test score. I’ve heard statements such as, “I didn’t get into (this Ivy League), darn I should’ve scored 30 points higher on the SAT.” When in reality, other parts of his or her application were lacking. By no means will a score of 1520 be a major weakness, so it is best to look holistically at how advanced your application is; decide from there. IMO, you should just go and take the test again- on any given day you may get + or - 40 points. If you don’t see a score difference, then that’s only 4 hours lost rather than 50 or so hours studying when improvements could have been made to the rest of your application. If you feel like all the other aspects of your application are solid, and you have the time, by all means study for the higher score.
Good luck with your college app!

@1zogden1 I got a 760 M and 700 EBRW. My biggest problem was the grammar section where I got a 33/40 with only -6. If I can raise that score a little bit, it could really help my superscore. What sucks on the new SAT is that now CR+W is combined, I also have to do just as well on CR again whereas before my CR would be fine so I could focus just on grammar. Now I have to do really well on both again since the score is combined. Our score is right at Georgetown’s average right now which isn’t great but not too bad either. I also got an 18 on the essay which is decent but I retook in June without the essay since no college I looked at even recommended it. Knowing I didn’t have a 50 min essay waiting for me at the end made it a lot easier to get through the test without burning out somewhere in the middle.

thanks @ZealousScholar! Good thing I’m only a sophomore and have time. I was working with a Kaplan, then Barron’s, then the CB’s book. I think I’ll get the Barron’s you said and PR cracking the SAT.

@marsha.ss I feel the same way as you. I got 1460 and 7/7/7 on the essay. I think I am going to retake it with the essay because some schools require it. Anyone have any advice for us???

If I got 1550 and 35 in ACT, which one to present to colleges ? or should I retake SAT to get above 1550 ?

Any advice here, thanks

Got 1590 (800 M 790 R/W) with 7/7/7.

As a person who got 52/52 on reading, I specifically remember that there was a quadruplet towards the beginning, so I guess that’s a thing.

@Mimic17 congrats! You are done. Go ahead and focus on your summer activities and essays. Send both scores to colleges as it s

@Currywiththeshot Thanks so much for the tips!

@blueeagle Wow, you’re only an upcoming sophomore? Your score is very impressive, and if you have all that time, then other books may be better. PR, Barron’s, and Kaplan all basically contain the same information. For math try Warner’s 28 lessons for the New SAT math for students that can score more than 600 and want a 800. For the reading and writing sections, try the IES Prep books. There are others but the IES books have the most accurate questions IMO.

@ZealousScholar What books did you use to prep? How effective were they? What did you score?

Does anybody know if it’s possible to superscore the new SAT if one test is taken with writing and the other without? So if you got a great essay score, but would like to improve in the other areas, can you take the SAT without writing on the second try and then superscore the M and CRW sections?

@mamaedefamilia I don’t see why colleges wouldn’t superscore just because you didn’t do the essay again, but I’m not 100% sure.

So what was the curve? Like for those who got 750+ in Math or R/W, how many did you miss to get what you got?

@staticjava I got a 790 on math with 1 wrong and I know someone who got a 770 with 3 wrong so about -10 for the math section on the May test

@1zogden1 What about Reading?

I called the admissions office at Princeton and was told that they will not even look at SAT scores if they are not associated with an essay on the same testing date.
