@renee, i agree with obutto, and how could you know that they were working on Differnt tasks? Never said anything about working on different tasks.

also was it flattery for the puffery one?

for the puffery one, i got (B) exaggerated self-regard,… probably wrong?

Doesn’t the fact that the writer called the location a “factory” imply that they were working together to reach a common goal?

for the dude who was like “we humans are superior, blah blah blah”

i put “exaggerated self-regard”

I’d say it was exaggerated self-regard because the phrase said “self-stroking puffery” i.e. indulgent self-flattery which more closely correlated to self-regard than “useless flattery” (author said nothing about useless)

Also, qualify means to clarify or pose an exception to an assertion you just made. (i.e., “I really like , but sometimes it’s too _.”) The two sentences they referred to had said the basic meaning of “Further research on string theory may one day explain much of the rest of the universe, but at this point we are not advanced enough to get there.” or something haha

What did you guys get for the question with the Welsh lady? The one which asked what did she basically mean with this quote etc? Sorry for the crappy explanation of the question.

i agree with aquapatty. thats what i thought

@ Obutto ; That she didn’t think her nationality was her most important characteristic?

There was nothing to infer. Smashing on log and root anvils has nothing to do with the nuts on the trees. The trees are not bushes. Once the chimps arrived, they had to get the nuts off. Ergo…

Also, the author was not ranting in any way.

for the chimp one, if you read on like 3-4 paragraphs later the guy mentions that they were using the tools to break the nuts.

I got enthusiastic devotion because it said like “Ferverishly put it on” or something

The author was not ranting, but it was the overall main concept that she was trying to put into the reader’s minds. If they were working together, it would completely destroy her argument as a whole.

but anvils are something you hammer on, and something goes in between the hammer and the anvil, like nuts
the log and root anvils were not the tree trunk as is they all hit it to gather the nuts
the root shows that they broke the nuts on the roots of the tree

wait so what was the factory one…:/

sentence completion:
ostensibly(not salient)
squalid(not cataclysmic)
tycoon/philanthropist
succinctly
archeaologist
fierce/contentious

passages:
- chimpanzees
- physics string theory
- stolen diamond w/ lawyer and butler

author of passage 2 would be in complete agreement
butler was deferential at lawyer
prudent
‘want’ means lack of
superhuman computer represents lack of technology to use it as a tool
passage 2 would say that the mathematicians and physicians should pursue different avenues
“as soon as he turned his back” showed his eagerness
the quote from robert crusoe represented an omen
growing sense of alarm(in lawyer)/moment of perplexity
Only repeated meant brevity of interval
look in chimpanzee’s eye/raising of hand shows relation between empathy and technology
cost means personal toll
chimpanzees were cooperating and working together in the forest/cracking nutsx
puffery was self-regard and exaggeration
lying passage - qualification
welsh passage - her nationality wasn’t her most important characteristic
nun was enthusiastic devotion

keep adding/put a question mark if you don’t agree

@bassmastah5

Hahaha I see now. At first, I was wondering what reason they had to hit the trees themselves, if not to shake the nuts off, but I see your point!

(First CC post! Wh00t.)

Definitely agree on enthusiastic devotion, exaggerated self-regard, nuts, and nationality not most important.
The factory one was that they were all working together towards a common goal. Or something like that.

What were the other choices to this question?
“lying passage - qualification”
