MBA from engineering background?

I'm thinking about changing my career from engineering to something business related by means of an MBA. looking at my career path right now, time it will take, pay, lifestyle, etc, id rather take my effort and make more money.

I have a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering from the university of michigan. I have 3+ years engineering experience in the automotive industry.

I have no distinct leadership experience, no corporate business experience (although my dad had a small business for 25 years that im fairly familiar with), less then good gpa for engineering (2.9-my school was pretty hard, personal issues, i skipped most my classes and partied way too much, still passed in 4 years, never failed a class, just didn't put in the time and effort to do well)

right now i simply can't compete for a spot in a top MBA school, but this can change with time and determination. i put myself in a bad position because i was naive and stupid about my future and career. i need ideas in how i can change this. i'll be 25 soon, if im going to make a change i need to plan and start asap. im willing to take 2-3 years to prep myself.

what can i do for good leadership experience?

would it be worth it to look for a new engineering job with more relevance to business? what type of role would this be?

would it be worth it to go to an easier school for some type of engineering masters degree? get a good gpa while still having the weight of attending u of m for undergrad?

would it be worth it to reach out to u of m's admissions for their MBA program and talk to them about my aspirations and developing a plan? i did already pay them quite a bit for my undergrad... lol

i know i know...i don't "need" to go to a top business school, but if i were to go just anywhere, i could just work up the corporate ladder where i am now and hope the job and environment changes enough to satisfy me.

What was your GPA at UM? Have you taken the GMAT?

Have you asked your company if they can sponsor you for a part-time MBA program while still working there?
This is your best bet because a lower ranked MBA program adds little value and cost a lot.

unless i fail to get into a top program, that’s what im going to work to.

the last thing i am worried about is cost. i live well within my means, i have no debt, and there’s time to save up even more before i actually go back to school.

i haven’t taken the GMAT but time and multiple tries will assure me at least a decent to good score. im still an engineer, i use problem solving techniques and basic calc and physics principles every day - i see that as an advantage.

those are check-marks, i need to form a plan to make me a more desirable applicant. im hoping a good GMAT score will overshadow my low GPA. but what i do now until i apply (2-3 years from now) needs to make up for what i haven’t been doing.

is there specific “engineering” jobs that give good work experience leading to an MBA?
in the real world, outside of school and work, what can one do to gain “good” leadership experience?
is there an MBA focus that pairs particularly well with an engineering background?
