MCAT timing & old vs. new exam

Our son is in the first class to take the new MCAT. He and a few friends would like to take a crack at the old exam before the new one takes effect. He will obviously contact a few med schools to make sure they are accepting the old one first. If he waits until spring semester junior year, it will be the new exam. If he takes it in the summer after sophomore year, it will still be the old exam. He will have two semesters of intro bio & chem, two semesters of org chem, two semesters of physics and one semester of genetics by then. He can't take biochemistry until junior year, but he could take physiology spring semester sophomore year. It would be a tough schedule, but some have said this course is needed for the MCAT.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

I dont know the exact years, but schools will only accept the old mcat the first year after the new mcat comes out. after that, new mcat only. Dont know how your son will fit into this since I dont know the exact date. Maybe someone else knows.

In any case, you only need bio, chem, ochem, and physics for the old mcat. Any other classes like biochem, genetics, physio is not needed. Sure they will help, but they wont help you much. I took the mcat without any of those classes

The last time the old MCAT will be accepted will be for the class entering in summer/fall 2016. (Per AAMC.)

For students applying for summer/fall 2017 admission, only the new MCAT will be accepted.

Is it possible to apply to med schools a year early than normal? I wouldn’t mind taking the new one, but I was thinking about getting all my pre med courses out of the way and possibly applying to med schools my junior year…

only if you will be graduating a year early

futuredoctor - are you in college yet?
