I heard that MCB 102 and 104 don't use the textbook as much as lower div. classes. Do the people who already took it recommend buying the books at all? If so do we need the most current edition? Thorner is teaching 102 and Welch is teaching 104.
I took Bio 1A last semester and I would consider the book unnecessary for Doudna and Firestone but needed for Rine's section because he wrote questions not covered in lecture.

I rarely, if ever, used the books for 102 and 104. For 102, you will most likely get readers. For 104, it is a very lecture-based course, so the book is not necessary.

Welch is a great teacher though, one of the best in the MCB department. You should be able to do well on his section if you just look over his notes (he has those tablet things)

So my question is, do you get tested on the material that is not in the readers and lectures?

no. there is far enough material in the lectures/readers as is. For 104, they occasionally assign problems and reading, but it’s not necessary.
