Can anyone tell me anything good about McBryde???? My S just found out his assignment today at orientation and he was given McBryde dorm. What's it like? Is it mainly upperclassmen? Who lives there? It was not even one of our top 3 choices and I have heard nothing good about the place. Any info that can make this situation workable? Please help!!

Other than the Horseshoe apartments, McBryde is probably the best location on campus. It is bordered by Russell House on one side, the library on one side, and Sumpter Street on the other. If your son has a car, Bull Street garage is about a 20 second walk. Also, it’s not too far from the new Honors dorm which will have a cafeteria and coffee shop, so he’ll have dining options. I’ve never heard any major complaints about McBryde other than that it’s old.

the location is very good–its good that is your S living there because girls dont tend to like it as much because of the age & its usually mostly boys living there. it used to be fraternity housing before Greek Village was built so you can imagine it’s seen its better days but alas it’s a dorm and none of them are fabulous (cept the new honors dorms prob). and there are several wings and they have common areas which are good for studying/hanging out etc.

I think the rooms are a decent size and it’s got a great location. I’m not positive, but I think the rooms have a microfridge provided (you might want to double-check on that one.) Also, move-in should be fairly easy since it’s not a high-rise with tons of students.
In the past, the pre-med learning community students were housed there as well as a lot of music students.
Here’s a link to a brochure on McBryde.

I am trying to be upbeat about the situation, but saw a blog that had some less than desirable pictures of mildewed piping and talk about the pipes dripping over someone’s bed for 2 weeks before it was fixed. My S doesn’t live like that at home and he shouldn’t have to live like that at the dorm. It’s very distressing. I do thank you for the good input though.

yeah i tried to stay positive with my feedback as to not scare you. it is a less than desirable dorm in my opinion but i’m a girl. i know plenty of boys who lived there just fine…and other who did not. it really depends on the person and how high their standards are…

Thanks, “Texan”. I can only hope for the best. But if it is really bad…I will make a stink. I don’t like paying thousands of dollars for a room that’s AWFUL! There’s got to be a silver lining. Thanks!

Cotelizard – count yourself fortunate to have a son that cares about room conditions – my son proably wouldn’t even notice leaky pipes because of the layers of clothes and other stuff scattered around his room that would serve as a sponge. Seriously, maybe it won’t be as bad as you think, we’ll keep our fingers crossed. Make sure to file a report after move in.

When you go to move in, you will be given an extensive checklist. Be sure to put in writing anything that needs to be fixed, is missing, or damaged. Then follow-up by putting in a maintenance request at FIXX online.

If there is a problem that is still not resolved, call the parent’s program:
"If you need help at any time, the toll-free Parents Assistance Line (1-800-868-6752) is available for direct contact to us. In addition, please send an e-mail to scparents@sc.edu with any questions or feedback. "
My son had an item in his room that needed fixing, and was not taken care of. I called the parent’s line and maintenance came the next day!
I hope all goes well.
Have you tried calling housing to see if there might be another dorm option open? My son was in South Quad last year and there was an apt. of freshman girls on his hall, although it is usually reserved for upperclassmen. Might be worth a shot.

Thanks you all! I’m feeling a little better about the situation. I will definitely make a call and check the list when we check in! DonHo…maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to have a layed back kid!! Cheers!

Another idea for you, might be to go under VIP to the Personal Tab and under Housing-UChoose there is a section of dorms with available rooms and below that link there is a section to request a room change. We received an email yesterday indicating that there are rooms available for all USC students so it would seem that they are plenty of vacancies. Now might be the time to give it a shot.
