McCain on affirmative action

Well here's an interesting story. Apparently McCain did the oh so horrible "flip flop" on this issue.

Political Radar: McCain Reverses Himself on Affirmative Action

Something to think about if your voting since I know affirmative action is a pretty serious issue to us here in cc.

He's got more waffles than house of pancakes.

Dude...it's 10 freakin' years.

You'd think some opinions would change.

Maybe it's just me, but if you have half a brain, you should be able to get into any kind of regular state school. Affirmative action was about giving opportunities. Nowadays, it's like for fancy schmancys like Michelle Obama going to Ivy League school. I'm sorry, I really don't pity you if you even think of Ivy League.

But it's not just "some" - but many, many positions.

You already know the truth, don't you? I shouldn't confuse you with facts, but here I go.

Michelle Obama was from a regular unprivileged family, and she had to take out a lot of loans in order to pay for her Princeton education. Moreover, Princeton made the right call in admitting her because she went on to become a very successful lawyer. Many say that she is just as capable, if not more, than Barack.

And quit blaming minorities for affirmative action. If you're a conservative-minded (aka "there's too much reverse racism against whites nowadays!") white person and didn't get into an Ivy League, ever consider the possibility that you simply weren't good enough? A decent SAT score and a few leadership positions do not entitle you to an Ivy League school. Moreover, if your spot was indeed "stolen", it is just as likely that a rich squash-playing white kid took it, so stop trying to soothe your disappointment with the old-fashioned comfort of racial anger.

Well, the thing about politics is that you have to skew your representation somewhat to get elected. McCain is getting bashed left and right for not being conservative enough for conservatives and not being Obama for liberals. To get the nomination and secure sizable conservative support he's going to have to play with his words a bit. In the primaries, I'm sure there were plenty of statements that deviated from his usual position (which is still better than Obama's =P which I feel are either nonsensical or nonspecific or just plan nonexistent), and now he's back to most of his old stances.

Really? Who criticizes McCain? I've never heard a harsh word spoken about him... everyone is "meh." He could kill a man, and no one would notice.

Clearly you do not live in the NE.

McCain's trying to bait Obama into a racially sensitive issue and exploit the (hopefully few) undecided voters that are, since they're not sold on or inspired by McCain, just aching for a reason to not vote for Obama.

"Michelle Obama was from a regular unprivileged family, and she had to take out a lot of loans in order to pay for her Princeton education. Moreover, Princeton made the right call in admitting her because she went on to become a very successful lawyer. Many say that she is just as capable, if not more, than Barack."

Good point. This notion that the Obamas are elitist is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard of. Though I think the whole Obama's a muslim thing is probably the most ridiculous thing I've heard. At least they worked hard for the position they're in right now. Compared to say George Bush.

That's very sad that she had to take on loans. The horror! The price of Princeton! Sheesh, she wants everything free doesn't she?

There is a thing called financial aid

It sounds like you completely missed the point, pugfug90. Regardless of whether or not you disagree with someone, at least keep the posts relevant to what they said.

Obama has flip flopped on many topics.

The funny thing about this is:

A few weeks ago, the McCain campaign accused Obama of flip-flopping on Iraq, because Obama states that he wants to assess the situation on the ground. McCain tries to falsely claim that Obama used to be proponent of a strict and inflexible withdrawal.

Now, McCain steals Obama's timeline plan in the wake of the Maliki statements, and now accuses Obama of being an inflexible timetabler despite having falsely accused him of changing his position just a few weeks ago.

So McCain is now in a bind. Either Obama is a flip-flopper who wants to listen to the generals on the ground (making McCain a thief of ideas), or Obama never did flip-flop and actually does advocate a hard timeline (making McCain a liar). A thief or a liar. Take your pick.

Comprehensive financial aid is new. It probably didn't exist when Michelle Obama went to Princeton.

nb I meant things like this as Obama has flip flip flopped.

-gun control
-domestic surveillance legislation
-for a united Jerusalem under Israeli control and then, when apprised of U.S. policy and Palestinian chagrin, against it
-The Threat of Iran
-Special interests
-Public financing
-The Cuba embargo
-Illegal immigration
-Decriminalization of marijuana

Obama flip-flops, while McCain grows wiser.
