Hansee: oldest dorm; single rooms; VERY quiet even though Greek Row is on the other side of the street behind it; northern-most dorm on campus; located right next to an outdoor volleyball court with sand/basketball court/tennis court. With that said, very few freshman live there because of its detachment from campus and social events. If you enjoy the privacy, then live there. The price is pretty good.
Haggett: weird-shaped, octagonal rooms; Rick’s Cafe (everyone goes here for ice cream; I mean, $1.50 for 8 SCOOPS OF ICE CREAM IS RIDICULOUS for a “volunteer” function in addition to all the other stuff on their menu); pianos/Foosball/table-tennis. Haggett is not bad, although I only go there for ice cream, and definitely not for its rooms, so take that for what it’s worth.
McMahon: “clustered” rooms (four rooms; two people in each room; in one giant room with a bathroom and lounge area); walk-in closets; views of Husky Stadium and UVillage; The 8 (soooo many people go here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner…except me, as it serves, in my opinion, your typical cafeteria-style food); The Nook (mini-market to buy a bunch of crap and snacks that a freshman lives off of); private work-out area (treadmills and the like); elevators (for people that live on the 5th floor and up; other than that, don’t use them…just some friendly advice); location is north campus, and the closest northern residence hall to the HUB, Red Square, and the Quad (useful information for those that don’t like to walk an extra couple hundred feet to McCarty, Haggett or Hansee). I know people in all the dorms, and McMahon has a consensus of being a good dorm. I know many people living there next year. The only downsides to it are that the only people you really get to meet are the ones in your cluster. Most people find it tougher to make friends outside of your cluster given the style of the rooms. The other downside is that clusters are NOT coed, which means if you have problems with one of the people in your cluster, you will have perhaps a more annoying time dorming as a freshman. That, and the fact that being “sexiled” in McMahon seems to happen a lot…just saying.
Finally, McCarty: my freshman dorm; “no-party” McCarty is pretty spot on even though it’s very close to Greek Row just like Hansee; many upperclassmen dorm here (most of the ones I’ve met are awesome, but definitely don’t have that “I want to meet everyone and party with everyone” mindset that freshman will undoubtedly bring once Autumn quarter rolls around; Ian’s Domain (awesome stuff right here, open until 1 am; comes in handy all the time); ABC rooms and extra study areas/lounges (very useful; if you’re an insomniac like me, you’ll meet many students in these rooms in the wee hours of the morning); north campus location once again (best location in my mind even if it’s not the best dorm; helped me on so many occasions with getting to Kane Hall in ~5 minutes, which does come in handy for freshman); the floors are squared (the simplicity of this room organization is nice for students that have a hard time navigating residence halls, although the tacky green doors and cream-white cemented walls become annoying to look at when you’re really tired). With all this said, the last thing I’ll add to describe McCarty is its single-sex bathrooms on each floor! It is such a pain walking an entire flight of stairs down one floor each morning to take a simple pee, especially during winter quarter when it was freezing-cold outside and the wind hits you in the face like a hammer. Girls get keys to the female bathrooms, so don’t try anything dumb, dudes. If you can deal with this, then you’ll like this dorm. I’m content with it, but the triples suck. I’m in one with some “associates” from high school, and trust me on this, I’ve learned my lesson on why not to dorm with people you know during your freshman year. Anyway, are you interested in any dorms on west campus? Like Terry, Elm, Alder or Poplar? If you want a nice dorm, look into one on west campus. Then again, none of those four residence halls are actually ON campus, so they provide a different experience in themselves.

My God, thank you for spending your time providing me such info. I really appreciate that! I thought no one is gonna answer my question lol.

No problem! Around this time, people seem to be more focused on the basics of the academic curriculum at UW, which can be easily explained if they just do some online browsing or decide to actually call UW. Dorming is such a huge part of a student’s freshman experience that I wasn’t going to let this pass by. Then again, we’ll probably see a lot of dorming threads on this forum around June, which is when you get to decide what you want to do in those regards. If you have any more questions, go ahead and ask away! By the way, congratulations on getting into the University of Washington!

Are you still in Udub? May I have your email if possible via PM? Wanted to get to know more people in UW before going there. haha
