I need to correct my post #35 above. It should read on the last paragraph:
Yes, you can send your application in Aug.1 (or whenever you want to by midnight** Dec. 1) and any ACT scores later as long as it is by December 31. All applications must be submitted by **Dec.1but other documents can be submitted up until midnight Dec 31.
@gettingschooled Do you know if being an auto-admit makes it substantially easier to get into McCombs? Also, what was your son’s rank when he applied? You said he had similar stats, but I am not sure what his rank was.
Yes, being auto admit helps because you have a higher rank which means a higher AI. Of course a non auto admit with a 2400 might end up with a higher AI than you and an auto admit with a PAI of 1 or 2 won’t do as well.
My son was between 6 and 7 percent of his class and got a 2100 on his SAT and a 31 on ACT. I really thought he should have taken the ACT again because I thought he could do better but he was done. In the end he got in. He had 10 APs by the time he graduated and he definitely got whatever extra points there were for exceeding the minimum criteria.
As far as a PAI, we figured he was a 4 or a 5. Most likely a 4 though. He did a lot in high school but he did not cure cancer and he grew up in a pretty privileged area. He also played a lot of video games and watched a fair amount of Netflix. He would have been happy to go to A&M had he not gotten into McCombs.
@gettingschooled True. But essays have the biggest weight on PAI. So unless he did not write compelling essays, I could see why not getting a 6 would seem realistic.
@gettingschooled Since the ACT Business formula only looks at math, english, and the essay, couldn’t I just retake the ACT again and solely focus on just the math, english, and the essay? I could send a lower ACT overall score with higher math and english scores than a higher composite with lower math and english scores.
@TheAvidSeeker It really makes me irritated when people try to game all the stats. Try to do your best in all parts of the test.
My advice would be to send your app in before December. You would already be ahead of the game. Focus on good essays and use your Expanded Resume to explain how you showed leadership/initiative in your ecs. If you want you could take the time between now and November to start a business venture or try and get an internship.
Give them every reason to give you ‘points’ and show them why you are awesome!
@gettingschooled Good news. I got my ACT scores back and I got a perfect score in English and a 35 on the math. For the business ACT model it is -.630 + (HSR * .015) + (ACT M * .062) + (ACT EngComp * .031).
Do you know what the ACT EngComp is? Is it the essay score and the english section score put together to give you a new score?
UT requires you to submit the ACT and SAT with essay. It would make no sense to require it and then ignore it so I assume it includes it. But I don’t work there so I do not know.
Remember that those formulas are now at least a few years old. They could have changed. Don’t overthink it.
Unless the ACT changed from last year the test results give you a combined English/Essay score. I would assume that is the score UT uses for the AI calculation.
Please don’t complain that it is unfair when other students from less competitive schools get in. I find these students admirable because despite being in a less-desirable schools where you find lackluster programs and less than sterling teachers, they are able to succeed. These students usually from poor neighborhoods are given the chance to study in one of the best Business schools in the nation.
Now, to answer your questions.
McCombs being highly competitive does holistic approach even with auto-admit students
-rank is more important than GPA
-McCombs is not first come first serve. Turn in application before deadline. You will know acceptance 3rd week February
-send new ACT score before 12/31/16 and UT will choose score that benefits you most
BTW, my daughter was accepted at McCombs. Her ACT was 30 but rank was -2% and yes, she came from a less competitive school.
I understand. It was very stressful time for me too, and I am not even the student! As a mom, my advice to you is not to over-analyze. Your ACT scores are outstanding, and I think that you really have a very good chance of being accepted.
My daughter’s ECs is nothing spectacular, although there were a lot of volunteer hours. The highest elected position in high school was treasurer of Asian Club. No business-related positions/activities that I can remember.
I’ve been getting a lot of mixed feedback on the value of the essays. However, I might add that my daughter turned-in 3 essays instead of 2, 3 recommendation letters and an expanded resume. Please spend time on those.
