McCombs School of Business - Which is Best for Freshman Admission?

Hello everyone!

I am a rising senior in high school just trying to gather as much information as possible about UT’s McComb’s School of Business. I would love to go there, but am unsure about a lot of things. I am going to start several discussions based on my incoming questions about McCombs and UT in general. I will appreciate all answers and whatever advice that can help me on my way to college applications and decisions!

My first few questions concern the multiple undergrad programs avaliable at McCombs. I am currently deciding whether to think about applying to the BBA or BHP program. I am not sure what the actual differences are between the two and I would appreciate any information that can help me choose.

I have heard differing views about automatic admission for UT and whether that means automatic admission into McCombs as well. I am currently well within the range of the top 7% required for automatic admission to UT, but does that mean that I can get automatically admitted to McCombs as well?

Last of all, I would like to know (at least for Fall 2016, even though I am starting Fall 2017) the application timeline including all of the deadlines and events that I need to know to fully plan my summer and school year.

Once again, thanks for all of the help!

There is NO automatic admission for McCombs. You do, however qualify for automatic admission to UT in general however, just not your major. What is your rank? SAT? EC’s? This information would help me gauge on whether you would be able to make it into the BHP- where the average class rank was 2.2% and the average SAT estimate was 1510 out of 1600.

My current class rank is about 1.4%. The latest SAT score I received was a 2190. I am currently in a Business Academy that I hold several leadership positions within.

I also don’t think it matters what major in McCombs you apply too, you just get in or you don’t. I don’t think they officially let you select your major until Sophomore year anyway.

Everyone enters mccombs as an unspecified business major. However, you also should apply to honors, which is a separate application in my status after you submit your apply texas. I’m an entering business honors major, so let me know if you have any questions!

Also, submit your Apply Texas as soon as possible after August 1. Then you will gain access to UT’s MyStatus after a couple days, where you can submit additional materials/resume/rec letters. Also in that portal is the honors application. You will apply to both the BBA and the BHP programs. Priority deadline is Oct 15. Regular is Dec 1. I sent my application in Oct 16 last year, interviewed for bhp early Nov, and received my decision in the first wave around thanksgiving.

I would not advise submitting asap. (sorry if people keep seeing me say this) Aim for early October. I also got into BHP if that means anything. Applying to BHP could only help your chances at BBA admission. Your Rank = awesomesauce, your SAT is a tad low

What is the breakdown of your SAT scores? UT uses the math and writing scores along with your class rank to calculate your Academic Index.

You do not have to submit your essays at the same time that you submit your Apply Texas application. You can log back into your account on Apply Texas and clicking on the my essay tab.

From the Apply Texas website:

***At the time you submit your application, you will have the choice to SUBMIT all saved essays with your application, or to submit each essay individually later via the My Essays tab.

Here is a page from Apply Texas regarding essay submission and formatting.
https://www.applytexas.org/adappc/html/faq_essay.html

My SAT Breakdown as of now is: 690 Reading, 770 Writing, 700 Math

McCombs cares about your math and reading composite alot. For the ACT, it’s math and english plus your essay score.

@Thelma2 Do you know if you can get your UT EID and access to MyStatus before you submit the essays?

Good question @gettingschooled I just looked up the old emails from UT and my son received his UT EID 7 days after the essays were submitted. Coincidence?
That would be a question for the University to answer for an exact answer.

@Thelma2 Do you know what constitutes as the application so the housing app is available? I heard that the essays can be put in separately? With that being said, is september a safe date to get first choice dorms?

@TheAvidSeeker - if I remember correctly last year the link to submit your housing deposit was not available until 1-2 days after the complete application was submitted.
I believe September would be safe. Most all people I know admitted for Fall 2016 that made a point to submit their app for those priority deadlines- Oct. 15- all got their first choice.

@bookmom7 Do you have to complete the essay for the housing deposit to come 1-2 days after? Or could the essay be done separately even after you get your housing deposit.

Well, my only frame of reference is my DS having the essays done to complete the application so, I don’t know if they can be submitted later or not. Do you know who your regional rep is? They are usually a good contact to have & I am sure would have a definitive answer.

I would call your regional rep @TheAvidSeeker for this detailed of a question.

I looked up my old emails. We did our housing app on Oct. 27. Im sure we could have prior, I really don’t know why that compared to when app and essays submitted. I cannot recall that specific information.

@TheAvidSeeker in order to be able to fill out a housing application, your application must be complete, which means,UT must have every required article received: On line Apply Texas Application, transcripts, and essays. Once you get your ID number and can check MyStatus, it will give you a checklist of items you still need to complete and what you have completed. Here is from the UT housing: Words in ( ) are mine.

Getting Started-step 1
A. Complete your UT Admission Application. Once you are admissions complete, you are able to apply for housing.
(on the website, complete is bolded)

B. Apply for housing (https://utdirect.utexas.edu/hfis/studentAppHRTS.WBX). There is a $50 non-refundable application fee. The earlier you apply for housing, the more likely you are to receive a housing contract and your top preferences. Receiving a housing contract is not guaranteed, as they are sent based on availability in housing application date order. The housing application opens on August 1. (you do not have to be given admissions to complete the housing application but you cannot fill out the housing contract until you are granted admission to UT- Texas A&M is different process-so be mindful of that if you apply to both).

step 2
Returning Your Contract
A. Once you have received your university acceptance letter, accept your enrollment to the university and satisfy your enrollment deposit. After you have accepted your enrollment, you will be eligible to receive a housing contract offer.

B. Housing contract notifications are sent out via email in housing application date order. Once you receive your housing contract, sign and complete it by the expiration date.

If you are 18 or older, you will be able to sign your housing contract online.

If you are not yet 18, you will need to print your housing contract. There will be a space for you to sign, and there will also be a box for a contract guarantor to fill out (typically a parent or guardian). The completed housing contract can then be scanned and emailed to housing@austin.utexas.edu.

If you miss the housing contract expiration date, your housing contract offer will be cancelled and your housing application deactivated. You can reactivate that at any time on your My Housing page (insert correct link) or simply email our office with your UT EID.

C. The $300 housing advance payment is also due by the contract expiration date. The advance payment will go towards your first housing bill.

@TheAvidSeeker
While you can upload your essays at a later date from submitting the Apply Texas application, your application is not considered complete until you submit your essays. You will not have access to fill out the housing application until your complete Apply Texas application is submitted.
Sorry, no shortcuts.

As bookmom7 said, you should be fine if you submit by the priority deadline.
