Yes – we are from Southern California, so these are very attractive rents!
And…I may have asked this before, but can you confirm: if a new student starts in Y1, can they
a) graduate in 3 years if their major allows it OR
b) stay for 4 years to pick up either a minor or a second major OR
c) can they earn a co-terminal master’s in those same four (or maybe 4.5 years)?
You are a wealth of knowledge. I really, really appreciate your being on this forum!
Yes, I believe they can finish in 3 years. My daughter (CDN citizen from US HS) started fall 2019 in 5-yr engineering program as a U1 and intend to finish in 4 years w/a minor.
Not sure about a second major though. You may want to check with department.
One thing we have learned is that they may be some hiccups for the structured program such as engineering where class are quite set. For example, she had to do one math with U0 so she had a few issues with class selection. Staff were helpful at helping her navigate through this and she is caught up!
Also, not all AP are recognized as it depends on major. She had a lot of humanities, etc…and they recognized only one! But, again, she is in engineering!
Hope this helps!
All students, except those from Quebec, can complete a 120 credit program if they so choose regardless of AP credits used.
I do not believe that McGill has formal combined undergrad/master’s programs but an ad hoc arrangement could be made depending on how courses work out.
My application says the same thing - I’m sure it just means that they are going through the last part of the review process before they make their decision.
Hi I’m an international student. I applied to McGill faculty of arts, science, arts & sciences combined. They asked me for my midyear exam result, which I submitted on March 10th. When could I be expecting a result? Thanks
Montreal is a bargain. My son paid around $800 US the first year in McGill housing (Solin – a large private room in a nice apartment he shared with one other boy.) In his second year he got a small 2-bedroom apartment with a friend right on Boulevard St Laurent and paid $550. This year he moved into a less fashionable area (Rue Wolfe) which he really likes. He is paying only around $400 for his share of a slightly rundown pad (which he likes – he’s into the gritty, un-yuppy scene).
Many students will also take four classes per semester instead of five…so still take four years. McGill is a demanding workload…my son thrived in his four class semesters and struggled a bit in his five class semesters.
Residences at McGill are pretty social (in normal years). They are a great way to make friends for sure. There are some dorm like high-rises (e.g., La Marq) that cater to students - but the rents are high. The majority of kids (from the US) live on campus the first year and then off campus (typically either the Ghetto - student area right next to campus - or the Plateau).
My kids live in very nice places in the Plateau. Both pay about $850 CDN (so about $650 US) all in (meaning including utilities). As a parent, I was shocked by how much money we saved when the boys went off campus. The dorm and meal plan are decently expensive. That said, you save a tremendous amount versus US schools.
If your child is thinking off campus, have them look at “McGill Off Campus Housing” group in Facebook. Lots of places listed…and kids saying “looking for a room in an apartment…”. Also, the McGill subreddit tends to have kids doing the same. Given the crazy year, housing “groups” and friend groups really blew up a bit. So lots of kids are looking for people to fill rooms.
Hey guys, I’ve had this question on my mind for quite a long time. So, my top 5 average is a 97.2, and my prerequisites are all 97 or above. The problem is that I have a 67 in history because I messed up on this one test. Do you think I might get rejected because of that? History is not a part of my top 5 and it is not a prerequisite course. Please let me know what y’all think, thanks!
Hi,
I applied in October into science and arts and science. I have mostly A’s and all AP/Honors classes with one B. My portal update the Further Review Required mid-March and requested my semester two grades. I submitted March 20th, when do you think I should hear? I am a Canadian citizen living in America.
hi, yes i’ve had that for months now and its stressing me out haha- on the mcgill website it says that it means we are in a “grey zone” but when will we get our decisions?
Mine said that up until a couple of weeks ago, and then it changed to “further review required” and they asked for my mid-year grades. I don’t think it’s reason for concern, McGill just seems super slow with their process. I hope you hear soon!!
