Im a mcgill student, and as great as our school is, it is WAYYYYYYY overrated. maybe we are 12th in terms of prestige, but definitely not in terms of funding etc. I mean, we are NOT better than Standford.

Yes it is good, but look at the crappy jumps in rankings. Berkeley is not in the 20s. By grad programs and by prestige it is easly top 5 in the world

I'm happy for McGill and I think it's awesome we have such a great international rep, but I don't know if the quality of education here is that much better.

But I think rankings are pretty much crap anyway. Don't go to a school for the "ranking", go there because it's honestly a good fit for you.

Oh I went to fall convocation yesterday and you better believe they milked this for all it's worth. It was awesome.

I know this is nice and all, but what does it really mean? Nothing. My personal .02 $: for a publicly funded university, McGill is probably the best in the world. If it's not the best, it's second to UC Berkeley. How can a public university really compete against a conglomerate of Universities who collectively have more many than god? McGill's endowment is pitiful, so whether the ranking is true or not, it's still impressive.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: there's no ego at McGill. Why? I'm not exactly sure, but I think money might have something to do with it. McGill's strapped for cash, so it doesn't "front" as much as it's private colleagues. They don't have a lot of anything to put where their mouth is, where as Harvard has enough money to let all of it students attend for free.

That's why I love it here, there's no ego (this is just a state-school on steroids).

^probably the best description of McGill Ive read anywhere.

I agree - excellent post.

Does anyone see the jumps, kinda ridiculous!

Ide say Berkeley is above, and maybe a couple more publics, but McGill should fit in at least top 25

I'm happy that McGill is up there but it seems a little dubious that its rank has gone up almost 10 places in just a year, overtaking a school like Stanford.

That said, I'm very happy with McGill so far and the quality of education I'm getting.

Dr. Mambo is actually spot on. McGill is the "barefoot aristocrat"

Kids here, for the most part, are pretty chill and don't hype the school.

But yeah, stanford is better.

McGill ranked first in Maclean's as well, seems like a good month for our school.

Mcgill is still ranked pretty horribly for all the other world rankings lol.

There is actually only one other independent world ranking, which is the world rankings from Shanghai Jiatong, and McGill doesn't do well in it. There's the Newsweek ranking but it is 50% based on 3 measures from the Shanghai ranking and 40% based on 4 measures from THES, so it's not really an independent ranking. Since McGill did horribly in the Shanghai ranking, then obviously it won't do very well in the Newsweek ranking either.

McGill is overrated...University is overrated. This thread is a little overrated.

But in all truthfulness, I love McGill. Definitely not overrated. We deserve our spot at the top...we desire the glory and the fame and we deserve to soak it up...bathe in it ...rub it all over our bodies.
