My school limits me as to the number of schools I’m allowed to apply to, so I’m trying to choose between McGill and UMD-College Park. I’d be applying for computer science: I’m specifically interested in artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Which school, in general, has a better CS program?
I have a 35 ACT, 3.9 unweighted GPA (don’t remember weighted GPA: it’s like 4.7). Fives on AP European History, AP Enviro, AP English Lit, AP US History, and AP US Gov, four on AP Chemistry. 780 Math Level 2 SAT II, 800 Biology SAT II, 720 US History SAT II. I founded and currently run a political group at my school, I swim for our varsity team, I edit our art magazine, I head one of our robotics teams, I am a staff writer at our satire newspaper, I’m a member of my racial affinity association, and I was the co-head of the student team that built our makerspace. I speak English and Swedish fluently, as well as Spanish and Mandarin Chinese with a working proficiency.
Money is not a factor in my application: I’m in-state for UMD College Park, but for other reasons, I also have subsidized tuition at Canadian schools so the cost for both schools is about equal.
They’re both good CS schools. Rather than asking which has the better CS program, I’d look to see which one has better undergrad offerings in AI and ML.
