I don’t see what’s so special about this program. At the end of it you have to be a McMaster University graduate.
:P

^ hater.

McMaster is a good university … although if I had like a 95%+ average, I’d rather go to the US than McMaster but some people are financially unable to make that choice.

EDIT: My friend with the 97% average in IB got into Health Science. beast.

Mac Heath Sci gets you to Med School. that’s good enough for most.

You can get into med school from anywhere. I’m still not impressed.

^but apparently Mac Health Sci. is as close to a sure bet as there is in Canada and students are looking for any advantage possible, so the popularity of the program increases.

It’s not about the actual school as much as it is for the prospect of getting into the dream grad school, which Mac Health Sci. seems to help with.

Alright, I get it then.

Only ~70 students out of the 160 get into a med school and the majority who enter the program want to go into med school. Nothing is a guarantee.

Do keep in mind the type of work that is required of Mac Health-Sci. A lot of it is group-based projects, from what I understand (good friend from high school is currently in the program, and it sounds like his day is just filled with group meetings and such) For some people, it’s great, but for others (like me) it might not be the right thing.

@darksoulz, a lot of them change their minds about what they want to do though. If you look at the stats, a ton go to really tough to get into grad schools like Law, Med, Dentistry, Pharmacy, etc. A huge portion do…but yea, the majority go into the program wanting med school.

I got accepted to Health Sci and I’m going there over Cornell for financial reasons - cornell gave me no aid lol. I don’t mind that much actually because health sci is a beast of a program. I’m gonna go ahead and say its the most competitive undergrad program in Canada, 230 spots, from which 150 matriculate, to 3000 applicants.

Lying on the Mac applications aren’t the same as lying on an American school application. There’s no place on the Mac apps to list your extracurriculars, so that’s not what they lie on. They lie on what they enjoy doing (i.e. they may say they love working in a group when they actually don’t). So yes, it’s not really a big deal to lie on the applications to these things. For example, someone in my program said that he was tired of learning out of textbooks in his application, although all he does is sits in his desk and study out of them which has earned him good marks. Needless to say, he doesn’t like the unstructured health sci.

And I honestly didn’t write it to provide balm to those who are rejected.

Oh and Pakalypse, I hope to see you next year :)

Ok, so I know this thread is REALLY old but I just saw it and I have some questions!
I’m a grade 11 student from Ontario and I want to apply to Mac B.H.Sc. next year.
Do they care about course rigor or do I just need to rack up the marks in whatever classes I have? (My school has an advanced stream and a regular stream, so I want to know if I should stick with advanced or go to regular next year and get higher marks.)
Do they consider APs in admission or only for course credits?

PLEASE RESPOND, I’M FREAKING OUT. My guidance counselor doesn’t know about this, which is why I’m asking here! Thanks!

Hi,

I was just wondering does the program (BHsc) look at your grade 12 marks from the April report card?

Thank you:)

Hi, How do the students from US apply to BHSc?

The requirements state:

Grade 12 U/M Requirements *

Biology (SBI4U)
Chemistry (SCH4U)
English (ENG4U)
One of:
Advanced Functions (MHF4U)
Calculus & Vectors ( MCV4U) or
Mathematics of Data Management ( MDM4U)
One non-math, non-science, non-technology 4U/M*
One additional U or M credit to total six
A minimum of 90% is required for consideration

I am wondering what Biology (SBI4U) equates to? Would they consider Honors or AP Bio results? What do all the codes equate to for US students?

They don’t seem to have any interest in SAT or SAT 2 scores.

Is the admission even open to students who complete US high schools (and are Canadian citizens)?

vinsim, BHSc is definitely open to students who graduate from US high schools!
If you go to [Admission Requirements | McMaster University](Admission Requirements - Future Students - McMaster University) and enter your info, it’ll tell you exactly what your requirements are.

I don’t think they look at your SAT scores. The only Canadian university I know of that does is McGill University.

Hope that helps!

how would you guys say mac health sci compares to queens life science in terms of prestige, quality of education, getting into MD program afterwards etc

Hi sockpuppetmaster,

Thanks for your reply. I was out of country so couldn’t respond promptly.

I went to this web site:

[Admission Requirements | McMaster University](Admission Requirements - Future Students - McMaster University)

“Attending a Secondry School outside Canada”

does not bring United States as a country in the drop down. Looked for America and USA
but could not find any reference to USA in the drop down.

Very strange - or may be my brain is not working ;-)

My question stands.

Thanks,

vinsim

Hi Sockpuppetmaster,

Thanks, I found the information (pasted below =====):

This still leaves some questions unanswered. I am currently in 10th grade:

1) Says:

"Required Courses

Grade 12 English"

A US Public High School student may have even completed AP English (Language and Composition) in 11th grade but the school may schedule AP English (Lit.) in Second semester of 12th grade (scheduling is computer based and very rigid). As a result there may not be any English in 1st Semester of 12 grade.

How would such a student provide transcripts for 12 grade English in 1st Semester under these circumstances?

2) It says:

“must complete at least 3 years of Mathematics to the Grade 12 (Senior) level”

I completed Algebra 1 and Geometry in Middle School (and summer break after middle school) - for which I was given HS credits and didn’t have to repeat these. Would that be counted as a year ? If not, then even after being a very good Math student with 3 APs - just in Math, I may not even qualify!

By the end of 11th grade I would have taken all of the following:

Algebra1 (in 8th grade), Geometry (after 8th grade in summer break), Algebra 2 (9th), Pre calc (9th), Calc AB (AP) (10th Sem1), Calc BC(AP) (10th Sem2).

I plan to take AP Statistics in 12th grade - but what if the school schedules it in second semester of 12th grade? And, even if it happens in 1st semester, and they don’t recognize Algebra 1 and Geometry I took in Middle School, I still would only have 2 and 1/2 years of Math. Would I qualify? Where would I take the other Math courses from - as school doesn’t have any other. Mine is a top rated High School in North Carolina.

I appreciate every ones support and insight.

Thank You.

VinSim.

======= Admission Requirements (copied from McMaster website==========
Program Name: Health Sciences I

American Style Curriculum:
General Requirements:

All applicants from acceptable American style schools, either domestic or international, must achieve both a high school diploma from an academic program and present all prerequisite courses for the specific Faculty and programs. In addition, all general admission requirements must be met. Please note that most home school curriculums regardless of their stated accreditation may not be considered as equivalent to the stated subject requirements below, and may not be deemed acceptable by McMaster University as satisfying our entry requirement, for students from an American high school curriculum. Applicants must meet all listed requirements:

Graduation from an academic or college-prep program at an accredited high school (U.S.A. or International)
Completed at least 3 full years of English* (Academic – not ESL) including Grade 12 (Senior) level
Applicants to all programs except Humanities 1, Social Sciences 1 and Music 1 must complete at least 3 years of Mathematics to the Grade 12 (Senior) level
Submit a combined SAT I score of at least 1200 from the two components, Critical Reading and Math (minimum score of 580 for Critical Reading and 520 for Math) or an ACT composite score of at least 27. (SAT I institution code is 0936. ACT institution code is 5326).
McMaster does not make offers of admission to students with an admission average of less than 80%. Possession of minimum grades does not guarantee admission.
McMaster will not apply weighting (as done by some high schools) to average calculations for AP level courses or honours courses from American curriculum high schools. We will use un-weighted GPA calculations only.
- Applicants who have not completed at least three full years of academic English in an English medium school must present satisfactory evidence of English Language Proficiency.

Admission averages are calculated using your best five academic grade 12/AP courses including the mandatory prerequisite courses for the selected program as specified below.

Note: AP courses are required for programs with specific Science and/or Mathematics requirements

Required Courses

Grade 12 English
One of: Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus, Statistics
AP Biology
AP Chemistry
One non-math or non-science academic Grade 12 course (courses such as weight-lifting or year-book are not acceptable)

Note: The Mandatory Supplementary Application, due February 1, 2012, is available on-line.
Note: A minimum average 90% is required for consideration. Admission is by selection.

Required Documentation

Official transcripts of all courses and grades completed through Grades 9-11 (Freshman-Junior years) as well as an official transcript from either the first semester, first trimester or first and second quartiles of Grades 12 (Senior year) are required for admission consideration. In addition, official test results of SAT 1 or ACT and English Language Proficiency test results (if applicable) are required. It is recommended that all required documentation should be submitted no later than February 15, 2012 in order to be considered for early admission for September 2012 entry.

Send only the transcripts/documents indicated. Do not send any additional documentation (letters of reference, certificates, achievements, financial statements, etc). The admissions decision is based solely on academics. Applicants to the Arts and Science, Bachelor of Health Sciences, Fine Arts, Music, and Integrated Science programs have additional requirements indicated on the Letter of Acknowledgement.

Please note: Applicants submitting trimester or quartile reports will be considered as the reports become available. However, if grades are not deemed to be sufficiently high enough for admission, then subsequent reports must be submitted and received by McMaster no later than April 1, 2012.

All students offered early admission based on interim grades must still submit final year transcripts indicating that they have maintained their grades and graduated from high school, as detailed in their offers of admission.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If you have been asked to meet our English Language Proficiency requirement then you must satisfy one of the following for admission consideration:

I have a question and if anyone could answer I would be very appreciative.

I am currently about to attend grade 11 in an Ontario highschool. I wish to apply to the undergraduate program at McMaster that this page is based on.

My first question, when applying to a Canadian university what grades do they look at, just 11 and 12 correct? I am wondering this because I finished grade 10 with a 89 average (I barely tried.)

Secondly, what would my chances be if I had about 95% average in the both upcoming years of 11 and 12. I play football and soccer and could have a chance of playing for the university.

Thanks.
