Columbia sits between Greenville and Charleston, about an hour and half each way. You may want to call Hillel in Charleston and Columbia and get more specifics about Jewish life on campus. If one of your goals is to meet/date/marry someone Jewish (which is in no way shallow, just the opposite) who you meet during college, you won't be "swimming in a very big pool." But all three of the major population centers have strong, long standing Jewish communities, Charleston one of the oldest in America.

In S's case, once he was accepted, and snt in his enrollmenet papers, his major department contacted him by mail with the list of a/v scholarships and the paperwork needed. The scholarship info is also posted somewhere on the dep't webpages (or the "School of" pages I cant remember which).People in other dep'ts may have a different route they took. It's something you may have to inquire about while there at the weekend.Be sure to have your S request a departmental informative interview as part of your time there. And yes, the departmental scholarship is stacked on the McNair.
One of the nicest things about the McNair weekend is the bond the kids form during those days. They stayed in touch after and some went to the same Orientation date. They met up again in august while living in Maxcy.Don't worry, your S will have a built in social group to get started with. And right away he'll meet the Carolina Scholars and the other Honors kids.

There is no GPA requirement for anything under McNair/Carolina Scholars to my knowledge. I’m on the McKissick, and my UW and W GPA were definitely not 3.8 or close for that matter. I had a 32 ACT though.

There is a Jewish fraternity on campus (AEPi), but to my knowledge no Jewish sorority exists here.

lost lawyer,
S was in computer engineering, and he got departmental scholarship info in July. That was a couple of years ago, when he was a freshman - things may have changed. Definitely try to attend scholars day and meet the profs in the dept. It’s a great dept.!
