MD distinguished scholar in the arts question

If anyone here did an instrumental music audition for the Maryland distinguished scholar in the arts scholarship, can you answer a couple of questions for me please?
The form indicated that the student should have three pieces prepared. What is the time limit? Should/must they be played from memory?
The form also asks whether you want to use their accompanist. Did anyone do that? Do you get to rehearse with the person, or do you just perform with them without practice? What are the other options? Bring your own accompanist? Play without an accompanist?
Any advice from anyone who has done this?
Many thanks.

You can call the music department (or the dept that sponsors the scholarship) and ask. I don’t know if you are the student or the mom (mother of…), but the student should be the one calling. GOOD LUCK!!! When is the audition?!

The scholarship is offered by the state, not UMCP, I just thought someone here would know about it. The auditions are in June for students who are currently juniors in HS. I’ll find someone somewhere who did this last year!
Thanks.

@motherofperl, I was an accompanist for friends who auditioned for MDS. I assume it’s an instrument? You will be competing against some VERY talented people, you will want to be your best. Memory is ALWAYS better. Bring you own accompanist, so that you can practice together. They will cut you off if you run long. It’s a fun experience, but like I said, VERY competitive.

Thanks Plumazul. That information is very helpful.

If anyone else knows how much time is allowed, please post it.
Thank you!

Congrats on the audition and good luck getting ready for it!!!

Just in case anyone else reading this was interested in the answer, I called the distinguished scholar people today and got the following information. The instrumental music students are to play two contrasting pieces, with a total playing time not to exceed 6 minutes. The music is not required to be memorized.
If you choose to use their accompanist, you are given 10-15 minutes to rehearse with the accompanist before playing.
Thanks for the good wishes for my daughter.

Is this scholarship only for music majors? My daughter is an accomplished violinist, but she is planning to major in biology.

Any high school in Maryland can nominate up to 5 juniors to audition for the scholarship in the arts category (which includes music, drama, dance and visual arts). The students don’t have to commit to be arts majors. The scholarships awarded are $3000/year for 4 years and are only valid for colleges located in Maryland. Similar scholarships are also available for academic achievement (as measured by standardized test scores and GPA).
