Scholarship Audition

So, I have an audition for a scholarship coming up at University of Mount Union. How competitive are these scholarships? The conductor didn't give me a list of pieces to choose from so I picked a class A solo from our solo and ensemble contest list. Also, what scales should I be expected to know? And how hard it the usual sight reading for an audition? Any response would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I would recommend calling the music department at the university and asking them these questions directly. The answers to these questions are very school-specific. One school required that my son have an hour’s program for its scholarship auditions (a standard memorized concert program; obviously with no scales, etudes, or sight reading). I’m sure that your school doesn’t want an hour’s program–they would have stated that specifically.

I sent an email to the band director and am now waiting on a reply. He didn’t mention any certain music that he wanted for the school’s wind ensemble audition so I figured anything would be fine. I talked to a friend who auditioned at other schools and they had her do a scale, sight reading and her prepared piece. But as you said, it varies from school to school.
