Meal Plan & Bookstore account questions

Hi,

I'm having problems choosing a meal plan, right now I just selected the Gold meal plan for safety but I don't know if it'll do or not. I'd like to eat 3 meals a day, maybe even more, and drink immense quantities of Mountain Dew :P, so which meal plan should I choose? What did you guys choose and how much do you expect to eat?

Also, I was wondering if I should open a bookstore account or not because I've heard that the books tend to be overpriced and you can get them cheaper online.

Thanks in advance.

I am a big eater and I went with the silver plan. I found it to be okay. Remember, you can always add money to your plan but you cannot get a refund of your unused points at the end of the semester. I needed to add about $75 to make it the last few weeks. I would go with silver so that you do not end up with a lot of unused points. Sorry, you can't buy Mountain Dew on campus. Stony Brook is a coke school.

The campus bookstore is very overpriced. You can find much lower prices on amazon or other sites. Just order your books early so that you have them before the semester starts.

Hey wolfie, thanks for the advice, I switched to meal plan 2.
How would I know what books to order if the semester hasn't started yet? I thought the teacher is supposed to tell us during class which textbooks to buy.

No Mountain Dew?? goes to cancel enrollment :P

i would suggest the silver plan as well. but you can always downgrade or upgrade during the semester so its not a big deal.

as for books, most teachers post the required books on the university bookstore website.

Your Customized Textbook List - Stony Brook University Bookstore

if its not listed, you can email the professor/department and maybe they'll know. sometimes the professors don't choose the book(s) until very late. you can also try calling the bookstore for the isbn's.

and yes, the teacher will tell you which books you definitely need on the first day of classes.

I would buy used books at half.com or you can check out campusbin.com and buy it off other students for a cheaper price on campus.

Thanks for the answers :)

How much do you guys usually spend on books per semester? If there's no average value just tell me the your min and max values.

min is like a novel for about 20 (plus tax), my max have been 160 for a psychology textbook. I know people in the biology/chemistry if you buy new ones gonna cost like 200-400 for the whole pack including study guide and everything?. So it does depends. That's why used are recommended if possible.
