Meal Plan

Hello. I was accepted to UGA yesterday, and now I’m concerning about the tuition and fees. Does UGA require studetns to participate in meal plan? I don’t want to spend a lot of money on that because I’m planning to cook and bring my mom’s food on the weekend to use.

You don’t have to do the meal plan, but it is really hard to live without it for many students. The dorms do have small kitchen where you can cook and of course you are welcome to bring some small cooking appliances into your dorm, but the meal plan is super convenient. Also, Snelling is a 24 hour dining hall which is great for unconventionally timed eaters. The meal plan is also basically unlimited so, maybe compare the cost of buying groceries to the price of a 5 or 7 day meal plan and see what’s cheaper.
Also, on days where cooking or your mom’s food isn’t and option, downtown Athens is pretty expensive to eat at…

If you think you can live cheaper without the meal plan, go for it.

@camover‌ would you recommend the 7 day meal plan, or do you think the extra two days goes to waste for most people.

Seven day meal plan for sure. The price difference is only $101 per semester ($1,978 for 7, $1,877 for 5). Students think they can live the extra two days, but they go hungry. The only reason someone should not get a 7 day plan is if they go home almost every weekend (which becomes hard to do when you get really into your clubs and studies).
Also, if you eat about $101 worth of food on every weekend of the semester, the money doesn’t go to waste
