Meal Plans at Reed? Experience?

Our son is starting at Reed this fall so we’re looking at the meal plan options. Having visited Reed and looked at the weely menus online, it seems the a la carte/declining balance pricing model is both a bit expensive per item and expensive in aggregate per meal (i.e., if you get an entree, beverage, salad, etc.).

So I’m wondering:

  1. Any current Reed students or parents with experience as to which meal plan (A, B or C) worked for them?
  2. Did you need to add extra dollars to your plan to cover the cost of food each semester?
  3. Did you take advantage of the kitchens/kitchenettes in many of the dorms to supplement the meal plans?

I realize all of this depends a lot on your student and their eating habits, but any experience would be welcome.

Thanks very much.

Hi, you should join the Reed Parents Facebook page. There was recently a discussion about this, and lots of variation in experience. My own kid had plan C with lots of points leftover, whereas other kids with plan A didn’t have enough. I would suggest you start with C as you can always add points.
