Dartmouth Dining uses a Declining Balance Account (DBA).
[quote]
Each dining plan consists of two components: For each plan, $200 will be deposited in a Topside Convenience Store account (Topside DBA), and the remaining amount will be set aside for food purchases at DDS dining facilities (Dining DBA). For example, the $1000 Mini Green Plan consists of a $800 Dining DBA account for food purchases at DDS dining facilities plus a $200 Topside DBA account for use at the Topside convenience store.

Basically, it's like a debit card. You purchase food, and the cost is deducted from you DBA. For summer, fall and winter quarters, any surplus DBA gets rolled over to the next term. So, especially if you are a guy, you might consider opting for the Big Green meal plan for the fall quarter. You get a 10% discount on food, and the extra will roll over to the next quarter.

when could we switch over to the mini green plan?

yes, you can. First find out which plan workd best for you. I noticed that my D started out with the Green plan, and at the end of the term she had money left over (and was feeding her friends during finals). But on the other hand she has a lot of guy friends who had the Big green plan, killed the plan (you just get billed if you go over). Like SJmom said, the good thing about the plans now is that you can roll over (when my D started you either used it or lost it).

hold on. I thought the meal plan was included in board?

The meal plan IS board, as in room and board. There is an item on the bill that says Room and an item that says Board.

oh okay. But wait, my dartmouth aid package includes board. Which meal plan does that refer to?

*What plan(s) will be assigned to First-Year students? How will the Fall ’07 Orientation factor into the new dining program? *

Entering First-Year students will be assigned to the Green Plan (at a cost of $1,250). They will receive $200 in Topside DBA, $1000 of Dining DBA, and two “special meals”. The two “special meals” will occur during the orientation period and account for $50 of the plan’s purchase price. First-Year students’ plans will become effective about 10 days before the beginning of fall term and will include the entire Fall Orientation period.

For fall term, a First-Year student may elect to change their dining plan only to the Big Green Dining plan provided the request is submitted to the Dartmouth Card Office before the end of the dining plan change period (the exact date will be determined and announced later).** First-Year students may not elect to move to the Mini-Green Dining Plan until after they have completed fall term**
