Student Athlete

My son is a student athlete and will be a freshman this fall. We have two already is college but understand the food plan at Dartmouth is different than most colleges. Are the meals on the freshman food plan "all you can eat," or are they itemized? I'd love to hear from someone who is a student athlete and eats A LOT!! Are there choices in meal plans(special plans for those with big appetites!!) or do all Freshman have to purchase the same plan?

Thank You!

Hi Sophie,

The mean plan is a declining balance plan that can be used anyplace on campus that serves food.

First-Year Meal Plan

First-year students are automatically enrolled in the Bonus Green DBA Meal Plan which carries a $1,025.00 cost and provides $50.00 bonus dollars plus two special event orientation meals. First year students have $1075.00 to spend from move-in day through the end of the term.

For those first year students who may desire a larger plan, the Big Green DBA Meal Plan may better address their needs. This plan carries a $1,200.00 cost and provides $125.00 bonus dollars plus two special event orientation meals. First year students have $1,325.00 to spend from move-in day through the end of the term.

At the beginning of the term (orientation) there will be a lot of events where they will eat free. In adddition as the meet and make new friends they will want ot eat a few meals off campus. Life is definitely going to change once he gets to Hanover. If he is eatring 3 meals at set times during the day, it's not going to happen during colloge life as there is a lot of eating on the run, and hardly no one gets up for breakfast if their first class isn't until 11 a.m.

The declining balance is use it or lose it. If he does not use it aal, the money is not carried over to the next term (D had $200 on her plan during finals and was literally feeding people who ran out of $$). She has friends who are athletes that ate over their pplan. If your son eats over his $$ you will just be billed for the balance in the next term.
