sooo i need to get a meal plan, and i'm stuck between the unlimited and the two meal per day plan. they're the same amount of money, only the unlimited plan has fewer flex bucks, and the two meal per day has more flex bucks. (correct me if i'm wrong.)

does anyone have any recommendations? are the extra flex bucks useful, or is it easier to use the meals? i would really love any information you guys have for me :]

You will get sick of the meal plan and will end up wasting some meals. The Flex bucks allow you to eat at some of the other dining establishments on campus besides for the cafeterias.

I agree with cybermom, you will get sick of the school food. I had 14 meals/week plan last semester, got sick of the food early, and started cooking or going off campus on the week-ends and using my flex bucks more often. I barely used my the amount of meals I was paying so this semester I downgraded to 10 meals/week and most of the time I still don't use all 10 in a week...although I use more than 7 so I guess it's still worth it. lol

But yeah, basically 14 or less. The meals they make during preview and orientation are way better than what we normally get, and so even though you might think you need more based on your first visit, you WILL get sick and tired of it at some point.

You get the 400 flexbucks each semester that bought the meal plan for.

Note: say you only used 300 flexbucks during fall 08. When spring 09 comes around, those 100 unused flexbucks are still available for you to use, in addition to the 400 flexbucks you're getting that semester. The flexbucks will not rollover into the summer however, just fall to spring.

Your weekly meals, if unused, are just lost, those do not rollover to the next week, semester, etc.

Our D lived in Dorman her first year. She is a vegetarian and worried the choices at Suwanee, etc would quickly become boring. She chose the Garnet bucks route and has loved that decision. She walks to Publix on weekends and gets groceries (now that she has a car she can also drive) and she cooks for herself most of the time. She can also go to the great eateries like Suwannee room or Park Ave and get a hot meal using her Garnet Bucks. We put 500 on her card at the beginning of the year and she is only NOW down to 90. That will roll over to next semester which is the BEAUTY of garnet bucks v. meal plan.

So, if you like to cook and don't HAVE to get a meal plan - go for the GBucks. however, if you like having 4 squares a day without the hassle of cooking - a meal plan is the way to go.

She's in Wildwood next semester and we thought she would have to get a meal plan there, but they don't require it so she's super psyched!

Does everyone, I mean everyone, get sick of the food?
To put it simply... I don't cook. I eat the same food at home every day for breakfast and lunch with tiny variations at dinner and I only, being serious here, eat chicken fingers out at eateries (ha- to give you an idea about my picky habits needing the same ol' simple food.) I was going to go with the unlimited meal plan but I keep hearing all this negativity and that nobody is able to sanely stick to the meal plan for the majority of the meals.... So should I stick with my instinct or drop the unlimited?

What about weekends? Won't you want to eat out sometimes?
You will have a refrigerator in your room if you like eating cereal and milk for breakfast for example.
You can bring a microwave to heat up stuff too as well as the dorm kitchen.
It is your decision, but we are just telling you that it can get very monotonous eating cafeteria food every day of the week 3 times a day.

Ha, oh no, I'm going to eat out too (it's not like I don't go out on weekends now!) and am very well aware of the fridge. I'm more trying to get a feel if even I will get sick of the food so I can decide on which to rely on more consistently. I'm also going to be living in Gilchrist (fairly certain) and the close proximity to Swanlee is very tempting.

I am trying to figure out which meal plan to get, so I'm trying to do some calculations. Does anyone know how much it costs to eat at the on-campus places if you are just paying cash? I'm not a big eater (usually one meal a day, sometimes two). I think I remember someone saying that it was $5 for breakfast, $6 for lunch, and $7 for dinner, but I'm not 100% sure. This also contradicts what they are charging you for the meal memberships.

125 block + $250 flexbucks = $1300
1050/125=$8.40 per meal

So, I'm not sure why they would charge someone 5,6 or 7 dollars if they are charging the student $8.40+

also, are there are 15 weeks in a semester?

Get the meal plan with the least meals and most flex$$$. it's worth it esp with Einstein bagels, Quizno, Starbucks, the smoothie place and the new Chillis. You're going to get kinda tired of the dining halls and want to use the flex. Trust me. Last sem I didnt have any meal plan, only garnet bucks. if you live in a dorm that allows you to NOT have a mealplan then i would do that because it worked out really well 4 me.

Cost per meal at Suwannee Room and Fresh Food Co:
Breakfast $6.50
Lunch $7.50
Dinner $8.50
That is what is charged if not using a meal plan- according to Seminole Dining.

The block plans allow for 150, 125 or 100 meals for the semester. The any plans allow for 14, 10 or 7 meals in a week. With the any plans the meals do not carry over to the next week. So with the 150 block plan you get 150 meals to eat at any time during the semester. Can eat 20 meals one week and 7 the next depending on your needs. Block will allow more flexiblity from week to week then the any plans that allow a set number per week.

yeah, but there are 113 days in the semester (if i did the math correctly).

let's say someone chose the 150 block plan. That would give them ABOUT 1 meal per day (except 37 days when they could have 2 meals). However, the block plan only give them 300 flex bucks.

Now, the 7 meal per week membership also gives you 1 meal per day (or 7 per week, so you can still be flexible), but it also gives you 500 flex bucks! 200 more than the block plan, which only gives you a few more meals.
