I am a freshman in college and am thinking of majoring in Mechanical Engineering. Right now I'm in the engineering school and i took physics 1 this semester. On the final exam I received a grade of 49% after studying a decent amount and got a final grade of C in the class. THroughout the semester I did well on homeworks and labs but poorly on tests. I like mechanics but don't seem to have a knack for it. if i stay a mechanical engineering major will the next four years be torture?

It is probably not a reason to jump ship, but you still need to look at it and ask yourself why you struggled with the course. What could you have improved to have done better? Did you exhaust all resources that were available to you? Is the problem conceptual or in problem solving? Pinpoint the areas that you need to work on instead of worrying about failure in the future because that attitude will certainly lead to exactly what you are beginning to question now.

As an engineering student, you’ll need to constantly solve problems that aren’t straight forward. This isn’t a skill that can be learned easily; it generally takes time and practice.

If you think this may be the problem, I would give it a little more practice and see if you can notice improvement.

If it is purely the material that confuses you, I wouldn’t be too terribly concerned. From my understanding, you’ll learn most of the physics that you’ll need in your MechE classes over again that pertain to that particular class.
