If you can’t figure that request out yourself you are going to have a very hard time being a competitive Phd candidate for admission.
If you are using US News rankings to select graduate schools instead of research fit, you are doing it wrong.
@BuckeyeMWDSG sorry i don’t understand what you mean haha.
@boneh3ad i am not using them to rank and apply to based on ranking. I simply wished to know the locations of the top 50 so that I can make a partial decision based on location of the school (due to my outdoor interest as well). I understand the importance of having the right research topic and adviser that will see it through in helping me in any way possible.
Why does “top 50” even matter to you, though? For that matter, what does “top 50” even mean? Top 50 overall? Top 50 in your subdiscipline of mechanical engineering? Really, you ought to be looking into schools that have research groups that interest you and populate your list that way, then factor in location and other “soft” factors.
Normally I am sympathetic to this kind of thing, but it is really very easy to find the U.S. News rankings of graduate programs - go to the U.S. News website and there’s a link in the left sidebar. It’s really easy to navigate to the ones you want from there.
Although you may find the National Research Council’s rankings more helpful: http://www.chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124744
And yeah, I agree with boneh3ad…location is really a secondary concern when it comes to a PhD program. This PhD could determine the trajectory of your entire career afterwards. You’ll have more flexibility to choose where you want to live if you go to the best program for your interests as a doctoral student. I’m not saying you have to go to a PhD program in the biggest urban area or anything like that, but don’t leave an otherwise good fit off your list because of location - especially because even most big urban areas are within an hour or so of great outdoor activities.
