Med School Chances

I am 22 years old and I am contemplating a major life change. I have been successful in my field and have made some good money for my age but my unhappiness has come to an all time low. Now I am wanting some opinions on the subject of Med School.

I am married and have a 2 year old daughter. My wife currently got a job which she makes enough money to support the family. I am wanting to get into college and major in Economics. With my electives I would like to complete the prerequisites for Med School.

I was wondering what are my chances of getting into med school when I'm 26 years old and how is the day to day life of a med school student. I might not have to work through med school but I would still like to be able to spend sometime with my family.

Please if this is a bad idea, be honest and let me know. Thank you for any info!

In fact, med schools relish non-science majors, including economics ones. But do pay attention to the cost of each, and also, volunteer in hospitals, do medical research and, of course, get a good score on the MCAT 2015 (i.e. the new version of the MCAT) and a good GPA.

When you say “good GPA” would a 3.5 be good enough for most med schools?

It highly depends on the MCAT. If the MCAT 2015 is what I think it is, with four subscores, each out of 15, aim for 43+ (the equivalent in today’s MCAT terms would be 32+)

A 3.5/32 is going to get you into some middling med schools (perhaps your own state med school if you don’t live in California) and perhaps even Tufts if you feel like it.
