I’m going to be a freshman this fall and I’m interested in the medical field. I just wanted to know the list of classes I need to take for the MCAT?
I’m pretty sure your advisor can help you out with that. I believe schools like Michigan have separate pre-med advisors as well.
You can major in whatever you want as long as you take the requisite classes for medical school.
Pre-med classes to take in general before you graduate to satisfy med school requirements: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/advising/academicplanning/prehealth/academics/premedicineacademics
For the MCAT specifically, the classes that will fulfill what is on the MCAT is:
Gen Chem I: Chem 125/126/130
Organic Chemistry I: Chem 210/211
Organic Chemistry II: Chem 215/216
Gen Chem II (Physical Chemistry): Chem 230 OR 260
Physics I: Physics 135/136 (recommended for pre meds) OR Physics 140/141
Physics II: Physics 235/236 (recommended for pre meds) OR Physics 240/241
Intro to Biology I: Bio 171
Intro to Biology II: Bio 172/173
Biochemistry: MCDB 310 OR Chem 351 OR Biolchem 415
Psychology: Psych 111 AND a 200 level psych class should be sufficient (i.e. Psych 280)
Sociology: Soc 100 (lower level) OR Soc 300 (upper level)
A “/” separates the Lecture and Lab class. I just grouped them together for the sake of organization.
If you have a specific question about any of these classes, I can answer it
Especially if its about choosing which classes to take cause I know I was confused when initially choosing.
@hailbate thanks so much for the help. My only question is when you write the / does that mean i should take all the classes or what because i’m not sure which intro chem class o take or which biochem class to take. Also, there a lot of other classes such as physiology or higher level genetics so should i take that as well for the MCAT. Sorry this is really confusing for me lol
So for example, for Organic Chemistry I, the Lab class is 216, and the Lecture class is 215. A majority of students take the lab and lecture class at the same time, so I just paired them together as 215/216. In themselves they are different classes, but they coincide with each other. I’m not actually sure if you need to take the lab class for the MCAT, but you should anyways since lab classes gives a practical use of the knowledge you learn in the lecture class.
In terms of classes where I had a “OR” is the only time when you need to make a decision between choices. I will briefly summarize the differences between all of them:
Gen Chem II (this class is a lot of math):
Chem 230 - Algebra based Gen Chem II class. This class is kind of catered around the material that will appear on the MCAT.
Chem 260 - Calculus based Gen Chem II class. They go over more than what is on the MCAT (i.e. they go over quantum physics). They advise that you take Calc I and calculus based physics (Physics 140) beforehand.
Personally I'd advise every pre-med to take Chem 230, as 260 is more for students who want to major in Chemistry
Physics I and II:
Physics 135 AND 235 - Algebra based Physics. Covers everything that would be on the MCAT
Physics 140 AND 240 - Calculus based Physics. Goes beyond that^
The MCAT requires you to only know algebra based physics, and 135 + 235 are a lot easier than 140 + 240 (just looking at the curve difference). Physics 140 + 240 is more for engineering students/physics majors. But both work for med school and the MCAT.
Biochem:
MCDB 310 - Non-cumulative final. Final grade is determined by exams (~80%) + projects/other stuff (~20%). Exams are multiple choice + free response.
Biolchem 415 - Cumulative final. Final grade is purely exams. Exams are only multiple choice.
Chem 351 - Do not take this class unless you are a biochemistry major lol. This is strictly the biochem for biochem majors, as it is a lot more intensive than MCDB 310 and Biolchem 415. I’ve compared the amount of material studied and it’s staggering to see the types of nitty gritty stuff they had to remember.
All 3 classes will do you well for the MCAT. Honestly pick your poison between MCDB 310 and Biolchem 415 if you are not a biochem major. Difficulty wise I can't comment on since I only took MCDB 310, but both should be about the same. The important differences lies in the way the class is run.
Sociology:
Soc 100 - if youre an underclassman, they recommend you take this class
Soc 300 - if anything other than an underclassman, they recommend you take this class
As for the other classes like genetics, physiology, etc. You do not need to have knowledge in those subjects prior to the MCAT. It may help to have taken those from what I hear, but in terms of what you will be tested on in the MCAT, it will strictly be on the subjects I mentioned.
@hailbate literally your amazing. Thanks so much for all the help this really helped a lot.
