I have primarily 2 questions:

1-What is the last semester in which med schools see your grades (assuming one is not taking a gap year)?

2-Is the MCAT the same like SAT, in which you can take it multiple times and submit your highest score? Or is it a one-chance only test.

1. It depends on when you apply. If you’re not taking a gap year (ie. applying between your junior and senior years), they will see grades up to the end of your junior year. Medical schools will not see your senior year fall semester grades unless you send them a transcript in December. Problem with this is that in some cases, decisions might have already been made on your app as far as interview/no interview.

2. You can take the MCAT as many times as you want. But, trust me, this is an exam you only want to take once. So…study your butt off and nail it the first time. Medical schools will see your score from all attempted MCAT exams, but only scores received in the last 3 years are acceptable for admission.

With regards to the first question, I’m guessing that they will still know which classes we will be taking our senior year when we fill in the applications? Also, I was planning on doing SMDEP in the summer going into my senior year. Other than getting experience, would this be worthless then considering we already submitted our applications?

You can indicate the courses you will be taking in the fall, just be sure to send grades to the schools who haven’t made a decision on your app as soon as grades are posted.

You add new experiences after your submit your primary application. Again, be sure to update application. You can do this by submitting a letter or e-mail. It’s best to check with the respective medical school. Some schools won’t permit any updates or additional materials unless you’ve been invited to interview.

The med school application process is long. You’ll submit your primary application (AMCAS for M.D., AACOMAS for D.O.) any time between June-August. Secondary applications start coming in June, depending on when you submit your primary application. After that, it can take weeks for your file to be marked complete and undergo preliminary screening. Long story short…you’ve got plenty of time to update your file after submitting the application.
