I’m a current freshman that will be a sophomore this fall. I took video production all throughout middle school and took video production again this year, but the main reason why I took video production was because it was the only elective at my middle school with writing opportunities. I was hoping to join the journalism elective next year instead of video. However, I tried out for both advanced newspaper and advanced video production and got into both. Advanced video production creates our school television that airs every week, and advanced newspaper publishes our school newspaper that publishes every day online and every month in print. Both of them are high-rigor and known to be competitive. But my video production teacher told me that there will still be writing opportunities as a screenwriter and scriptwriter in the video class. I am unsure which one to do; will it look bad that I gave up an elective I have been pursuing for three years?
how about you take Advanced Video Production this year, then switch to Advanced Newspaper for jr/sr year?
Colleges won’t know that you did 3 years of middle school video. You should take this time in HS to explore various classes/ECs/interests. If you would prefer newspaper, then do newspaper. Explore that. Then as you go through HS you can see if this is something you would like to pursue as a career. You may decide print media is for you or you may decide that writing for broadcast is more desirable, or that none of this is for you.
