What kind of people is media studies geared more for?

And what kinds of jobs can you get after college? Or do most people go to grad school after majoring in media studies?

Help would be appreciated. Mucho gracias.

Media studies is a wonderful major. It’s great for people who’s temperaments don’t fit with the hard work and creativity that the engineering disciplines require, the attention to detail that the hard sciences need, the deep understanding of the internal structure of a language that English and various foreign language endeavors want, or for that matter, any sort of hard work or creativity.

The Media Studies major opens up wide avenues of opportunity. You can work in the restaurant industry, ensuring smooth relations between the restaurant, clients, and cooks. Or you could work in the fast food industry, where you will be able to interact with customers on a daily basis, and be the face of the venue. You can even work in retail, where you solely will be responsible for mediating the goods-cash exchange between the store and the customer. And best of all, if you go to grad school after a Medias Studies degree, your ability to garner one of these jobs will be enhanced even more! Overall, it’s an excellent major to choose, and completely worth your time.

Many of the Media Studies majors are unemployed, apparently. But if you manage to get a high GPA (probably ~4.0) law school doesn’t seem impossible.

I should add that only in 2009 was the unemployed % for Mass Comm in the 50% area. In other years it’s around 20% which is not as far from other majors.

Jamie235: While what you’re saying is true to some degree, aren’t you being overly judgmental for someone that has only spent one semester here? Looking at your “Location” info, you seem to like to point out that you’re in EECS.

Note: I am not a Mass Comm major.

LOL Jamie.

OP, search for past posts for opinions on the major. I was a MS major for a lil’ bit before I just decided to do Haas only. People in the MS major are generally your basic sorority girl/Jr transfer. As you can see, the major doesn’t get much reputation. Many of the classes focus on theory and papers. If you want to study mass comm., don’t do it at Berkeley.

My friend is a media studies major. He says its easy to get A’s in his classes. As for post-graduation, he said he’s looking to get a graduate degree in journalism as he enjoys writing.
