Media Studies

Is UC Berkeley well known for it's media studies major and is it a capped major?

I can;t seem to find a ranking chart for mass communications or media studies..

I am thinking of Advertising or PR (even though I know this is more theoretical and analytical based, the website says that people still go into advertising and pr from a media studies degree)

Media Studies is a capped major. Essentially that means you need to fulfill the prerequisites before you apply and have at least a 3.2 GPA. If you have that, you automatically get in. I don’t think Media Studies is well known on campus. The major itself isn’t huge, but it’s a solid department. The major was previously called Mass Communications, so I don’t know where or what the ranking chart would be for it.

thanks

however if i graduate with the media studies degree will its still be well recognized since its from Berkeley? I’ve heard that pretty much any degree from Berkeley will land you decent jobs…

oh and is media studies pretty competitive in comparison to the engineering programs and business? anyone in this major feel to state their opinion of the major?

I think you should be able to find a job. Assuming you’re looking for something with advertising or PR, you could use the career center resources or look around for opportunities and internships during the summer and such. You might have to elaborate to a potential employer what Media Studies “is” and what you can do for them, for the name of the major is not as well known, but people who graduate with the degree should be able to find opportunities.

As for competitiveness, I don’t think there’s that much in the major’s courses. Most if not all of these classes are, as what one of my professor’s say “you’re up against yourself, not each other”. Engineering, science, and business courses tend to be on a scale or curve, while a lot these courses have the “opportunity” for everyone to get an A. So I don’t think there is a big sense of competition in the major.

oh yay! thanks
btw r u urself a media studies major then?

Yes I am, graduating (hopefully) this semester haha. I’ve had small interests in doing something advertising-based in the past, but I have instead shifting gears and am going to grad school for becoming a school counselor, so things have definitely changed for me personally.
