Medical Disqualifications

Does anyone know if having orthotics would medicall disqualify you for entry into the Naval Academy? If not, does anyone know where I could find out for sure? Thanks!

What do you mean by orthotics? Inserts in your footware?
The disqualifying conditions are listed in the back of the Academy catalog. However, for some of them, medical waivers have been known to have been given. For example, asthma, which usually is an automatic disqualifier, has been given a waiver (albiet rare), if certain medical tests are passed. The discussion which details this (for asthma) is on the old discussion page for CC.

Yes, inserts in shoes. Thank you for the info. I believe they are disqualifying, I checked in the catalog. Its unbelievable how many things are disqaulifying!

Check with the old forum thread. There was an excellent post on how to challenge a medical disqualification successfully.

I just heard from my regional director. Apparently even though I thought I was given a waiver for the "asthma" i'm not medically qualified. Very depressing.

scitsailor:
I am very sorry to hear of your disappointing news. Are you the candidate who had to pass a special medical test to prove that you did not really have asthma? Did you get a triple qualified letter previous to this? What happened to your waiver? If you feel up to it please share so that others can learn from your situation.
My sincere condolences for your disappointment.

Wait a minute...didn't the BGO tell you that you were triple q'd in October?? :(

scitsailor: Sorry to hear about your situation. Are you sure you and your regional director are using the same vocabulary? I would double check with usna admissions since your postings don't seem consistent. Either you did or did not get a waiver.

Do some calling and questioning. You've got a lotat stake. It's worth investing some additional time.

Good luck.

ok so get this. the letter that stated i got a waiver said that it would be granted "if and when you come in line for an offer of appointment", so when i called the dept of defense they said that they were waiting for the go-ahead from the school to give me the waiver. however, the school is waiting for the go-ahead from the dept of defense, so the whole thing is a massive miscommunication, and i believe that it can be straightened out.

and yes, my BGO did tell me i was triple q'ed, and yes i did take tests. the light at the end of the tunnel is back on!

Hmmm...as I recall, USNA only goes after the waiver if the candidate is competitive. Perhaps, now that you've got everything else lined up, they'll pursue it with DODMERB. Fingers crossed!

scitsailor:
Here's some upbeat information for you. My son also got a letter that said a waiver would be granted "if and when you come in line for an offer of appointment."

He is a proud member of the class of '08.

Keep on track and have a good back-up (just in case).
Good Luck.

thanks candidatemom :)

The medical mishaps got cleared up.

CONGRATULATIONS. Still an asthma success story.

Does anyone have any info on medical waivers granted for mild stage 1 psoriasis?
