I turned in my insurance waiver two weeks ago and haven't heard anything about it. How long does it take for them to review the waiver? And about how long after that (assuming they accept my current insurance) does it take for them to update my bill? My mom is pretty much refusing to pay the 600 dollars...

My boyfriend turned his in ~last week and it hasn't appeared in his account statement yet.

I would advise your mom to pay the money now -- if you overpay, you can get the money back, but if you don't pay out of spite, you might be subject to finance charges before you can get the matter cleared up.

I asked the same question to MIT financial, and here is their response:

yes the insurance waivers will go thru by Sept 30th, so if you waived it
then no need to worry and you should deduct it from your first months bill....

Thanks,
Susan Kenney

I called MIT Financial on Tuesday and spoke with a financial aid officer. The Medical Insurance waiver deduction will not appear until a later bill. We just deducted the med. insurance amount from the recent bill. You can always call MIT Medical and verify that they will approve the waiver. I contacted MIT Medical back in April once DD decided on MIT to make certain they would accept our family's insurance.

I'm pretty my entire semester payment is due on August 1. We don't have a monthly payment plan.

Thanks for the info.

so did the $20,200 (minus finaid) cover up the payment (health insurance, housing, tuition) for first semester? or is there more coming? ;P

Well, you get a bill every month, even if you pay tuition in one big chunk.

oh how big are the next bills, and what do they generally represent?

i may have to eat less chipotle burritoes depending on ur answer... :-P

Last year we were billed in July for Fall tuition, housing, insurance, fees, etc. The next bill that did not have a zero balance due showed up in Dec. with the Spring tuition and insurance on it, then another non-zero bill showed up in March with the Spring housing charge (dunno why that waited so late). The next non-zero bill was this month, for this coming Fall tuition, housing, insurance, fees, etc.

So, we only had bills to pay in July, Dec., and March. The other months, a bill shows up, but with nothing on it. (If you're on a monthly payment plan, there will be a non-zero balance every month, but of course it will be smaller than the scary-big numbers we see, since we aren't on a payment plan.)

Also, if you add money to TechCash, that will show up on your bursar's bill. That's the main reason I had bills in the non-tuition months -- I tended to run out of money at weird times.

ohh i see! thanks. now i can eat more burritoes and add chips as well. ;P
