I need to go on medical leave from my college, and I'm just wondering what I could be doing with my time while I'm gone. Specifically, I'm going on leave due to a mental health issue, and I am just curious to know about what people have done with their time while they've been on a sort of medical leave.

If anybody's curious, I am now starting my junior year of college. I plan to stay in the area that my college is in, partly because I'm living in an off-campus apartment and it would be difficult to find anyone to replace me at this point, and I am unable to go home at this time.

Anything you're remotely thinking of to say would be more than helpful!

Also, talk to the deans at your school. There may be restrictions on what you can do during a medical leave. For example, some schools may restrict your taking academic classes elsewhere during your leave.

Be sure you ask what you need to do to establish the ability to return to campus.

Also, I failed to inquire about what people might have done with time that they were not actively in treatment for something, like the time they were not in the doctor’s or counselor’s office. Thank you to the work ideas, also, have people just spent a lot of time online? Outside? Reading? I’m curious. Thanks a bazillion <3

I have a friend who went on medical leave last year due to chronic migraines. That took up most of her time until they were under control. But after that, she did a lot of reading, watching tv, and spent time with her family - basically stuff she doesn’t have time for in the school year.

Thanks guys, so helpful! What I ended up doing this semester is only taking about a third of the credits as I would have otherwise, and stayed at the same school. I spent a lot of time doing some writing to figure some things out as well as enjoying the outdoors (fall is beautiful here). I worked a little bit but nothing consistent because I felt like I didn’t have the space to show up on a regular basis. I slept a lot, too, and I feel like I’m going to be ready for the new term to start. Thanks again, hope you’re all having a nice holiday (if you celebrate)!
