Medical School- where do they pull our GPA from?

So as you know, once you transfer from a CC to a UC, your GPA gets wiped clean. Med schools (notably the UCs) have to look at your GPA, but you apply the fall junior year, which will be the year you transfer into a UC. What GPA do med schools use? Do they look at the GPA from your CC + UC GPA? Do they ignore your CC GPA? What about your grades from your Bio, Chem, Physics, e.t.c classes?

most medical schools take it all, some don’t accept cc credit

Is there somewhere online that tells you which colleges don’t accept cc credits?

probably, but you have to spend time researching which schools you will apply to.

I’m applying in a 1/2 year and I started researching schools last month. What I’m looking for is:

is my GPA in range of their average?

is my MCAT in range of their average?

do they accept CC credit?

will all the prereqs I take match up with their required ones?

do they require anything I don’t have?

cost

location

…things like that. It’s a more strategic process than applying to the UC’s.

Well the reason I’m asking is because I’m a bit concerned about taking my BCPM classes at my CC. I almost have no choice in not taking them because they’re the required classes to transfer to UCs.

@ Colleges not taking CC credit.

That is awesome. Raises my GPA.

**medical schools/B on the most part take cc credit but prefer that you take BCPM at a 4 year. If you apply to med school’s that don’t take cc credit, you will be automatically rejected.

Just to clarify what xMathx said, is it true that we apply to med school the fall of our junior year? That would mean I would be applying to a UC this fall and med school next fall?

That seems a little too quick to me. I would be willing to say that a substantial amount of med school applicants would not have their BCPM done by the end of the fall of their junior years. I mean assuming one applies to med school at the beginning of their junior year, and I am a CCC transfer, then the med school would have 0-1 semester/quarter of UC grades from me. How could that be?

Wouldn’t one apply for med school the fall of their senior year?

Also, I have never heard of a med school say that they don’t accept CC credit. Many may look unfavorably at CC credit in comparison to UC credit, but I’ve honestly never heard of a med school flat out rejecting community college credit.

@emilsinclair9: Thanks for clarifying up my question  Yeah, I’m curious too! 0-1 semester UC grades seems weird to me too.

ive been told that they avg out ur JC grades with ur transfer schools grades, and use that, as do Law schools, and most other grad schools.

What you’ve been told is wrong, there is no “averaging.” What they do is count both the grades from cc and from UC and count the units equally. They use all of your units and grade points regardless of institution and calculate a GPA from there.

and yeah, it get’s pretty diluted about when to take MCAT and apply as a transfer. If you’ve already taken the bio, chem, and physics series before you transfer then you’ll be set to take the MCAT and apply like a regular applicant. That’s most likely not the case so you’ll have to start finishing prereqs in your first semester and either increase prereq units per semester or stay a little longer. If you stay longer you have to petition or stay under the unit cap and notify the counselors.

it sucks.

Wow…that really…really…blows.

:-/

counting them both and at equal levels, is the same thing as averaging them out.

No. If you take the same amount of units at both institutions then they are equal. That is most likely not the case, so calculating GPA by including all the units (both at CC and UC) is aggregating.

Most med schools don’t care if you took your pre-reqs at a CC, it’s probably only the elite of the elite who would look down upon it.
