My high school has a medical science program where you go to our local hospital everyday. The program requires for students accepted to take honors and eventually AP math and science classes, along with additional biology and anatomy classes. I have applied and want to know if being in the program will help me stand out more when applying to colleges. I will also be taking 4 honors classes and at the end of high school around 9 AP classes. Plus of course, extra curriculars. Will I stand out any more to college if I partake in the medical science program?
At the hospital we would learn about different occupations and specialties. There is not additional coursework but we would be learning about different medical careers.
It will be another EC. No more, no less. Your rigorous curriculum to get into the program is probably more important.
Course rigor - which you’ll have - will be more important.
The activities may matter if you apply for nursing or Physician Assistant guaranteed programs.
(Premed is not a major and therefore the set of requirements don’'t have anything “medical” to it).
I think the more important question is: Do you want to do the program? Do you have an interest in a career in health and medicine, even if you are ultimately unsure?
Don’t do the program because you will think it will help you “stand out.” Do it if you are actually interested in the program and the education and experience it offers.
Is this the pathway that is the most rigorous in your school? Or is it a vocational pathway? In my kids school it is more of the latter. Make sure you understand which before you choose. Ask your GC
