Mediocre HS(started 2.0, huge upswing), Mediocre ACT, 3.42 College -> Good Univs?

What's the chances? Crap in HS, 28 in ACT, and 3.42 after 2 years of college.

Define "good" =P.

I think you have a decent shot at some "good" schools, in terms of big-name, perhaps Tulane, Boston U, etc. Are there any places you're particularly interested in?

UChicago/Northwestern.

Great recs, fr/so HS were 2.0 and jr/sr HS were 4.0...

A 3.42 is not competitive enough for both UChicago and Northwestern, especially with your high school GPA. I would guess that the minumum should be 3.6, or even higher depending on the college.

I'm applying to both and trying like hell - if I don't make it, I have Loyola Chicago as a safety.

pick a few schools in the middle like wisconsin, some other state schools...
why do you want to go to UChicago. they'll probably bring down your GPA below 3.00

I want to stay in Chicago - UChi is my dream school. I'm a lock at Loyola, so I'll get out of this hellhole no matter what.

How is life in Chicago? I am applying to U of Chicago too but wasnt sure if the windy city is for me.

Amazing. What do you want to know?

neverborn, i am in a similar situation. I am currently at DePaul and really want to transfer to northwestern but i am also considering uchicago. I have only completed one semester here and I have a 3.466, hopefully will be a 3.6-3.7 by the end of this semester. My high school stats were pretty bad also. 27 ACT 3.3/4.0uw 4.7/5.0w.

haha, we should have a club, I wanted out of DePaul so bad after first quarter that I'm at Community College now (actually, Chicago was great but the Theatre School was making me crazy) Best of luck everybody

I'm applying to Loyola as a safety, because I'm a lock there.

DePaul is overrun with extremist leftist administrators. :o

I have been desperately posting this everywhere, probably just hoping to get a different answer, so please pardon me if you've read it already and find it obnoxious...I too have a 3.4, but I took a rigorous, heavy courseload on top of a job, at a decent school (CU Boulder). I know that a 3.6 is considered a sort of cut-off competitive GPA, but I've read that one Ivy (I'll need to look up which) admits transfers such that the average admit GPA is a 3.7. Since some people must have 4.0s, some must have...3.4s! (Wishful thinking much? I know.)

Holding a job and having a 3.4 is pretty good imo. The whole process of admissions is to determine whether or not the school thinks you can handle the workload there, and having a job definetly helps your case.

I think you should apply. Best of luck :)

I had a job with 4.00 and took Calc, Physics, O Chem and Bio. My EC lack though :/

Twenty8, I could kiss you right now. Of course, I probably should have mentioned that I want to go to Brown. Haha.

Martinibluex, I think you should just shoot for it. Good luck to you. And good job. Those sound like tough classes.

Anyone have any idea how much the essay actually counts for?

essay = 1/4 +

Thanks :) I actually can't believe I asked that question. How could anyone know exactly? I hope it's the "+", because I'm counting on that as a strength in my apps.

Agree on counting on essays - I want to go to Chicago, and I knwo they weight essays a lot.

sorry, but i don't think u have a chance at chicago
