Medium school in northeast...

Your match/reach/safety breakdown is weird, but my text-to-speech reader is giving me trouble tonight and I don't have the time or patience to work through it right now (I'll come back tomorrow). What I will say is that Rochester does have a very large graduate population that is almost as large as their undergrad total, and that Smith probably is a match instead of a safety. I will also recommend UConn for pre-med/med and research.

Thanks, yeah, I'm currently in the process of rethinking my list, as I've done a lot more research on schools since I posted this. Maybe I'll post another list.

My list seems more like it's turning out to be:

Reaches
Lafayette, Colby

Reach/Matches
Rochester, Skidmore

Match/Safeties
Dickinson,

Safeties
The College of New Jersey,

Possibilities:
Drew?

It'll probably get bigger even though it's just gotten smaller. I know I have to do more research.

I've revisited my list, and I'd appreciate your thoughts. I started looking at Tufts, and I'd be especially interested in your thoughts regardging it. Does it seem like a realistic reach? It seems to be a very well rounded school, with sucessful programs in all that I'm interested in (Psychology/Neuroscience, French, Chemistry) and it's a good size, in Boston... seems perfect. I haven't visited anything, as the summer is dedicated to my sister's college search :P So, here's my updated list, and of course, I'm going to continue to add to and subtract from this list as I do research, as I'm going to be a junior this year, so I have some time. Thoughts please?

Reaches
Lafayette, Tufts

Reach/Matches
Rochester, Skidmore

Match/Safeties
Dickinson, TCNJ, Geneseo

Safeties
Clark,

also, any thoughts on safeties? Did I categorize these schools correctly?

Thanks a lot!

Tufts is not in Boston. It's actually a good distance outside the city.

Oh wow, you're right. And I knew that too.... I don't know why I typed that. w/e, what I meant was that it's a perfect location for me, being from New York.

Does anyone have any thoughts on my list, chances for any of the schools including Tufts??
Thanks

Tufts!!!!!!!!!!

uh, I guess that's good? (lol)

Rochester is more of a reach than Lafayette, but not as difficult to get into as Tufts. TCNJ and Geneseo may be more of a challenge admission wise than Skidmore.

its good to see you are making a list of potential colleges so soon. you can try applying to the 7-year med program at tcnj but thats pretty difficult to get into. look through college guides sorted by state and ask your guidance counselor for advice. here are some suggestions:

university of virginia
lehigh
drexel
rutgers
delaware or maryland
carnegie mellon (may be a stretch but definitely worth looking into.. your stats really dont look that bad)
syracuse
tufts as a stretch

Geneseo (and all of the SUNYs, really) are easier to get into if you're an out-of-state student. They're actively recruiting out-of-staters, especially those from outside the Northeast. If that applies to you, your odds just went up. :)

Hey I did my summer research at Stony Brook too! Yea, definately work hard this summer at that...an INTEL or Westinghouse pick would be an awesome accomplishment.

In terms of your schools, I agree Rochester may sound like a nice fit....small student body, good science/research, and if you really into music performance you have Eastman right there (it was one of my top schools as well).

Also, don't overlook Stony Brook too. (I'm assuming ur from LI). This is just my opinion, but I didn't want to go to SB because its literally 3 minutes away from me and I wanted to go away and experience something new, but in terms of research, internships, and science/medicine, its an awesome place--at a VERY cheap price form NYers (i think like $4,000). O and my french teacher in high school now teaches there and shes an awesome person--to respond to your french major..lol

cool, awesome post, very helpful. thanks! I'm a little scared of SB's big lectures though. Am I being naive?

I have a question of safeties for you guys. I know that I might be looking too much ahead, being that I haven't visited any of these places, but I'm getting information from schools in the mail and I'm changing around my list.

I got info from Colby in the mail, and I know this might be just marketing, but it seems like such an incredibly amazing school, they seem to have a student body of kids a lot like me. I also like the fact that they have a strong language program, as I'm definitely going to look into that in whatever school I go to. Also, Colby has a strong research program. As I’m delving deeper and deeper into my summer research, I’m realizing that I really like research. It would be cool to do it in college, especially since I might not want to go into medicine, and then I’d have another option. Therefore, I'm adding Colby to the list (again) and I'm gonna take off Lafayette, because one of my friends was talking about how there's a lot of drinking and fraternity/sorority there, and I just don't want a school that's governed by that. I might see if I can get a second opinion on Lafayette. I think I'm keeping everything else, as I haven't gotten much input from them, and my opinion of them remains the same.
So, in order of perceived admissions difficulty:

Colby, Tufts (I don't really know if I'm going to go for Tufts because I feel like I'll only get in if I apply ED, and at this point, I want ED at Colby or Rochester. We'll see though, maybe a visit will change my mind)

Rochester

Skidmore

Dickinson

TCNJ, Geneseo

Recently, my dad has really wanted me to look into less expensive options, so I don't really know where to look for that, also, I have no real safeties. I had Clark, but I felt like it was very focused on psychology, and if I didn't think that that was definitely what I wanted to do, I don't think I'd want to apply somewhere that's so one-sided, if you will.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I appreciate your input when I don't really know much about these schools, besides small things I hear from friends, and what I can get off their websites. I promise though, that I'll write up my visits in detail! I'm really anxious to go, but my parents really only want to visit schools for my sister right now (she's going to be a senior) so I think that I'll be able to start visits somewhere around October/November. That'll be cool.

I wouldn't apply ED to Colby until you've visited, you have to look into where Colby is, what's life outside of the classroomm, what is it like hving Waterville as your college town. I love Colby, but it took a visit to clarify a lot I did and didn't know about the school.

I agree, of course, these are just my preliminary thoughts.

Anybody have any thoughts on safeties?

I applied to Colby and Bates and I loved them both. I think Bowdoin and Weslean are more selective and I thought Bowdoin was a little snobby when i visited....just and impression. I know Bates is very strong in biology and it is one of those schools on the wall street journal list that have very high professional school placements...particularly because the faculty advisors take that responsibility very seriously and work with their students to find good grad school matches. I also got the feeling that both schools are are open to personal marketing strategies on the part of students. visits, calls, multiple interviews, schmoozing ....both Bates and Colby have strong div 3 athletics and although they do not have athletic scholarships, the coaches do weigh in on the applicants they would like to see accepted. So if you are strong in a sport, you should also make contact with that coach.

thanks. when i visit Colby, I'll definitely try to make the impression to any admissions person that I'm really interested in the school.

I would have thought it would be easier to find safeties, but so far it's been tough.....

Anyone know about Lafayette's french program?
