medschool HELP

I am a Chemistry major, first year at UCSD. I received my grades just a few days ago. I got a B- for MCWP 40 (Muir writing), a C+ for Chem 4, a Pass for Phil 13, but an F in Math 4C which is a prerequisite for Math 20A. I know I should have taken Math 10A, because one of my friends told me it was a lot easier than going back to Math 4C before taking 20A. I made a huge mistake, and now I have an F in my academic record :( I am also a pre-med student. I messed up a lot this quarter, and I regret it. I learned from this, and now I can't wait to go back to school, retake the class, and just study at Geisel.

Will my F really hurt my chances of getting into medschool now? What can I do to make up for it?

Many threads exist for problems like this. Unfortunately, with the competition today, Medical schools see no excuse for getting an F in undergrad. If you think about it. Medical schools only accept 1-5% of students. An admissions officer from UCLA said it’s like trying to get into a top Ivy league undergrad coming out of HS. Unless you have a spectacular MCAT score and close to a 4.0, that F will raise a flag.

Actually, now that I remember, you can avoid the F if you transfer to another school but refuse to transfer the class with the F over.

I wouldn’t think about med school for now. Since your gpa has put you on academic probation, you need to concentrate on getting a C+ average next quarter; otherwise, you’ll be expelled.
Also, you may want to think about whether chemistry is the right major as it’s fairly heavy duty science wise.
Work harder and best of luck next quarter.

a very competitive med school is pretty much out of the question.

but there are lots out there, and you’ll still end up with an MD or DO in the end.

I know a guy who got into med schools with Fs, however, that guy had serious family emergencies that took away from his academics. After that lone quarter, he had 4.0s.

However, since you dont seem to have any reason why you did poorly, i cant predict your chances (the guy wrote his entire personal statement about his experiences during the crisis).

Youre best bet would be to talk to an academic advisor at school (which you’ll have to do since you’re on academic probo)

What you said may be appropriate for someone with a 3.0 gpa, if only for motivational purposes. But it’s entirely inappropriate for someone with a 1.67 gpa who struggled with pre-chem and pre-calc, and at risk of academic disqualification after next quarter.

^That is true. Perhaps the OP should try a different major? Chem6A and Math10A are going to be harder, shall I also mention they are the easiest pre-med classes as well?

Chem major requires math 20x and phy2x, one of the reasons why most premeds are bio majors.
