Getting an F first quarter

So I slacked off big time this last quarter and ended up with an F in my math class, a C and probably 2 B's. Is it possible to still get into med school with these first quarter grades if I improve eventually?

Few Questions:

What is your major? What are your classes? What “type” of medical school are we reffering to? (i.e.: Carribean, Allopathic, Osteopathic, ivy league, and etc.)

You say improve “eventually”, if that means improving by next quarter you might have a chance. First quarter is tough for a lot of people because of adjusting and whatnot. But you have to ensure it doesn’t ever happen again.

can’t you retake the class? I’m not sure if they completely wipe it off your transcript or if both grades show up but just count the re-taken grade towards your GPA. Better get an A next time

i’m a human bio major and the class i failed is math 10a. i’m in chem 6a as well which i passed by 1 point. i wanna eventually go to boston university.

You cannot wipe an F off your transcript. Unfortunately this is going to raise a HUGE flag even though you will be able to retake it for the GPA replacement.

There really isn’t any good excuse to Medical schools for failing an undergraduate math class.

Although these grades are less than desirable. You have not completely ruined your chances of getting into medical school.

First of all, retake MATH 10A and make sure you get an A. When and if you apply to medical, your GPA will be calculated by averaging your grades in any classes which you retake. So in this instance your F and if you get A will be averaged for a C.

Second, DO NOT set your hopes on attending a certain medical school, it will almost always lead to disappointment.

Third, you need to make sure to get A’s your next quarter in all your classes especially in the classes that are a sequence, like CHEM 6B, to cast aside any doubt. As mentioned, your grades this first quarter will raise a red flag and you need to prove to the admission committees that it did not reflect your best academic performance.

If you are going to make any mistakes during your college career it is best that it occurs your first quarter.

Best of luck!

are you taking the entire 10 series? if not, can i have ur math10a book? i dont want to spend $200…

hey guys i’ve been checking web ct like a crazy person and my professor actually let me pass with a C-! i have no idea why or how she did this but she must be a very generous person. thanks for all the replies!
@peepsican: yes i am taking the whole series. i have the single and multivariable book which works for a, b and c and i got it for $70 from some guy. personally, facebook marketplace has been my best resource when it comes to buying textbooks.

Yeah, professors know you are freshmen so they will do that for you.

One C- won’t hurt but try to bring your GPA over a 3.6 or so to stay relatively safe for medical school. Try especially harder in your science classes as well. They take into account your science GPA along with the overall GPA.

can anyone tell me what this means [Academic Standing](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/academics/grades/academic-standing.html)

“4a. Undergraduates, you are considered subject to academic disqualification from further registration if at the end of any term your GPA for that term is less than 1.5, or if you have completed two successive terms on academic probation without achieving a cumulative GPA of 2.0.”

i got like a 1.45 because i effed up…am i not allowed back next quarter?

same question as chowsx: if we got a lower than 1.5 GPA our very first quarter, do we just automatically assume we’re already kicked out? what’s the process? thank you

Academic Probation is the answer to the last two posts. You have to bring it up to a certain GPA or you will be kicked.

Nevermind… misread the above posts

so id be on probation?

your nevermind is confusing me and im ****ting bricks. sorry

isn’t academic probation different from academic disqualification though?

I have a 2.3 I’m safe right?

^yes you are, as long as u have a 2.0 or above

i thought i should post here again since i got an answer to my question…just in case someone else has this issue in the future too (which im sure there will be).

anyways, since it was my first quarter at ucsd i got an exception to my “subject to disqualification” academic notice/standing…so im on academic probation instead of disqualified. hm…that was my main question when i had asked so yeah. k.

omg i am experiencing the same thing. i got my first F ever in my math class, and i’m freaking out. i am also pre-med, chem major, first year.

chowsx: how did you find that out? did they email you? or did you ask someone?
