Hey guys, I received an email Feb 29 about my UCSB Admissions Counselor. Did everyone get this email? The word-for-word email is below.
Dear x,

I would say this is a good sign, I remember getting a very similar email from sdsu and they accepted me. I got the Chancellor’s invite btw so maybe they’re sending them to the people who got in.
Not to rain on your parade, but both my son’s received the email and neither was accepted in 2013 and 2014. Things may have changed hopefully. Good luck to you.
@Gumbymom - were both of your sons engineering applicants? I think they were both high stat kids, right? Can’t imagine both being turned down. My son is really hoping UCSB comes through, but it might be the most “if-y” of all of his apps, even though it’s the only school that he is not applying to engineering for.
Older son was Environmental studies, High GPA and average ACT. Younger son was CS major, average UC GPA and above average ACT. Their HS does not have a good track record with UCSB and really gets no more than 4-6 acceptances a year with about 100+ applications. I do know that UCSB puts a large emphasis on EC’s and essays.
Each UC will review every applicant independently so I am sure there are many applicants that get Regents and/or Honors college at one UC but not another. That is why it is always best to apply broadly and just hope for the best. Too difficult to second guess admissions.
Their website states selection is based on 50% GPA/SAT/ACT and 50% EC/Essay. I believe SB is the only school that breaks it down so clearly the criteria that they use for acceptance. Good luck everyone!
Maybe reading too much into it but… the email from the counselor that started the thread sounds more promising than the email below:
Admission decisions will be released on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at 3 p.m. PST on the UCSB Applicant Status portal.
Have you activated your portal? If not, you can use your Perm number (xxxxxxx) or UC Application ID number to access your portal. Watch our short portal tutorial webinar for instructions.
At this time, please do not send transcripts, changes in class schedules or letters of recommendation. We will specifically request documents that are needed. We will request academic transcripts of most international applicants, but we will not request official documents for domestic applicants until after a student is admitted.

@OThisWait agreed. I don’t think the reminder email to create the portal means anything. I guess it just depends who the recipients of the counselor email were.
